i like to paste copied bits of the background silence of a given file in to make pauses that weren't long enough longer, and to paste them over unwanted noise in otherwise silent pauses.

Yes, this! I often paste over weird mouth sounds, and also cat noises. (because ~somebody~ is an attention whore *points at icon*)
