Generally I don't make posts because whatever I am thinking about really only matters to me, and even if it does matter to anyone else, I have finished whatever I wanted to do with that thought. Regarding compliments: I think if you analyze what you are really trying to say and state it clearly and honestly you can't go wrong. For instance, why is this a problem with ladies more so than gentlemen? Is it because what you sometimes really mean to say is NOT "you look nice" but "I find you attractive"? The second may be more difficult to say, but it IS permitted if it's what you mean. Also, is this only an issue when complimenting someone's appearance? Do you mainly compliment people on their looks? Why or why not? Do you also give compliments about achievements, behavior, and character? Aren't these more meaningful anyway? Would a more substantive compliment about appearance be along the lines of "you look happy today" or "you're a sight for sore eyes" or "I like the way you did your hair today" or "you're dressed quite elegantly" rather than "you look pretty"? Obviously I have over-thought this, but I don't care. You look great, by the way.

well your response just goes to show me, once again, how differently than others my brain works. it would seriously NEVER occur to me to say something to bolster someone's ego or make them like me. if i said something i thought was true and it had that effect that would be great, but neither would be a motivator for me. so i guess it's EVEN MORE COMPLEX than i can possible care to conceive. so i'll just go back to alienating people by making them feel badly about themselves i guess.
