The Palace of Justice was ornate and beautiful. The halls were expansive, and walking upon the floors of marble and polished tiles could have made anyone feel either very powerful, or very small. The stained glass made a rainbow of colors dance upon the floors, and the stone columns and edifices had been carved by masters of their craft.

In short, the palace was boring.

Ash stretched and yawned, Pikachu curled up comfortably on his lap as they stared out at the city during the early sunset. "Gee, it sure is boring around here," Ash grumbled. "I just wonder what Paarthurnax is up to." He had yet to meet the dragon that the green-suited businessman had told him about, and didn't have much of a chance to do so.

Maybe he should just make the chance and ride off on Charizard after Frollo went to bed.

Outside the window, a creature flitted past the glass, right across Ash's line of sight. And if there were any doubts that it was trying to get his attention, it did so again and again. It was a bird, but it was hard to tell what kind behind the stained glass, as it took on the color of each piece of glass as it flitted back and forth. But the bird seemed to not be going anywhere, waiting for him outside.

Ash didn't pay it any heed at first. Pikachu's tiny stomach rumbled, and Ash's stomach was encouraged to do the same.

"Chuuuu..."

"Yeah," Ash sighed in agreement. "I'm so hungry, I could eat a-- Whoa! What's that?"

He sat up a little more, finally noticing that something big was fluttering around outside. He twisted to the right, dragging his backpack to his side so he could dig out his Pokedex. He pointed it toward the bird.

A small beep sounded, before a mechanized voice cheerily provided helpful information.

"A window! People often build them into their homes to allow sunlight inside, without drastically raising their heating bills. In short, it was calling Ash stupid for even trying to identify something that clearly couldn't be seen. At least, that's how it came across ( ... )

After saying good night to Jennifer after her third visit to the New Year's party, she stepped outside in the cold streets of Nova City.

It was snowing, and yet, so lonely. Usually the city was downright annoying with how in-your-face the people, machines, and advertisements could get.

But now, even though snowflakes flurried about, the entire city felt enervated. Tsubaki almost wished she had her costume again, as her winter formal wear wasn't doing as much as she hoped it would.

While she tried to walk home through the snow, odd feelings stirred in her. She felt almost guilty, celebrating so much and yet doing so little. She didn't bring up the lack of progress on the notes, and Jennifer had been kind enough to do the same. Was it right, to be so leisurely, even when it felt as if dark things tread underfoot in Genessia?

...Ugh, staying up so late was getting her moody. Maybe after bath n' bed, she'd have a clearer head about it. Just had to find her way home first...

As she walked down the street, there was a strange silence to it all. So strangely quiet that it was almost deafening when the first howl went up. Not the howl of a crying child or a police siren, but of a wolf. That howl became several, answering the first in reply, first all over the city.

After a moment of silence, the howls began again, but far closer. More specifically, they were coming from behind Tsubaki, and they were moving closer. Until figures began appearing through the snow, a pack of wolves, white as the flurries around them, eyes glowing blue.

It had been a while since she'd had any kind of combat, but her ninja sense hadn't dulled. The footsteps of the hounds put her on edge. Her hand laid on the kunai around her waist. She waited, until the steps made a certain volume.

And then she sprung, throwing out a wave of blades to intercept the dogs.

He was out in the forest, hunting. He hunts alone since being here, it not being something he'd get his mom to do with him and just feeling just wrong to do with anyone else here (a little bit to do with Sam but mostly because of the other world thing and doubly because he was putting up an 'adjusted' front now and to see him hunting would kind of... fuck that image right over).

A rustle in the bushes, and he turns, eyes sharp. Not seeing anything, he turns back, mind solely focused on the task ahead of him...

The silence of the woods was peaceful and gentle. Not painful around the ears of any in the trees, but a comfort as the big flakes of snow fell. But that silence was shattered, a scream in the distance reaching him. The unmistakable scream of someone in trouble. A woman in trouble.

There was no hesitation as he abandoned the search for the thing he was hunting, turned and headed through the trees as fast as he could through the brush towards the sound.
