A picture-book moment to go with Buffy’s perfect life, Faith thought as Joyce called her name and, dutifully, she went to peer out the window.

Snow.

In Sunnydale, where it was so hot even hairless demons could work up a sweat. Had to be a miracle, or something, but since when did miracles happen when Faith could see it? ‘Course, she wasn’t supposed to be here right now, so maybe this was just another Buffy thing.

Or maybe it was just a freak of the weather, some kind of weird cold front or whatever. She told Joyce as much when the woman got all excited, wide-eyed and glowing.

She’d been surprised when she felt bad afterward, wrecking this moment. Buffy’s moment. But Buffy wasn’t here and it seemed like the moment was hers; this tiny slice of the impossible, this painted world where people cooked pies and left them on the windowsill to cool and rushed outside to join hands and sing…Kumbayah, or something.

“Oh, Faith, let’s go outside. Isn’t it beautiful?” smiled the perfect mother, and even Faith could melt at this, the crazy unexpected and yeah, she did like snow, and so what if she was really just keeping the moment warm for Buffy? She was here now. Damnit, why not enjoy it?

Joyce opened the door and Faith stepped outside. Maybe things aren’t always so dark, she thought, and laughing, stretched out her hands to catch the flakes as they fell.
