Week 4

Mar 17, 2009 22:06

Discussions started yesterday and there is one question that i find particularly interesting. "How is the love of today, different from the love of the renaissance times?" (or something along those lines, it 10.30pm and ive been up since 5am, so i cant be bothered to look it up!).

From the texts that we have studied in class, the first thing that came to mind was that both now and then seem to share a common trend of extreme complication, trials and tribulations, finding someone to love, or even harder yet - finding someone who loves you back! there is also the considerations of actually making the relationship work, avoiding major arguments and living together for 50-60 years without killing each other!!!

What i find to be one of the most tragic aspects of love is the other types of love - the ones that never make it into a proper relationship for reasons out of their control. Im talking about unrequited love - for exapmple in Midsummer Nights dream, Helen and Demetrius, as well as all the other messy love triangles! or even forbidded love, and i think we could all agree that the most famous example of that being Romeo and Juliet.

I happen to believe it is IMPOSSIBLE to define love in one condense and precise definition. I looked up "Love" in the dictionary, and was given 13 diffferent definitions for the one word! It is riddled with complications and complexity... and is made up of so many tangents, including relationship, marriage, societies influences, no wonder no one really understands it.

One thing that i definitley dont think has changed over time in regards to love is while it is wonderful, beautiful, precious and rare, i cant help thinking that it always seems to have an inane ability to mess up peoples lives!!!! I have written a somewhat negative poem to stress the stress somewhat! It differs somewhat from my usual positive musings (or perhaps "ramblings" is a better word) on love, ive been caught up in somewhat related issues of a turbulent week!

It could happen to you any old day

A transition from smart to stupid.
Stealthly love it comes your way
by the ever deceptive cupid.

Casts an arrow of silly emotion
Piercing vulnerable heart
guided by a single notion
for a relationship to start

But sometimes its not so bad
just to want and just to hold
at least it lessens the sad
empty fear of growing old!

This week i commented on Georgina's livejournal entry, which can be found at: http://geebusd.livejournal.com/28868.html

Hey G, what awesome sonnets! you have a great gift for rhythmn and rhyming patterns!! well done!
i loved "sonnet on the nature of long-term relationships" especially. you have written that with a refreshing sense of honesty and sweet vulnerability. it is a hard to say i love you and even harder still to really sum up the degree of that love, but i really think you have achieved this and in such a nice, uncomplicated way, particularly in the lines "My love for you is pure and true And I really want to marry you."
Fantastic work =)
