Midnight Walks

It isn't that Siwon is a light sleeper, though he by all means not a heavy sleeper either. He sleeps normally, as the normal person would, and he awakens to certain sounds just as normal people would too. As a result, he doesn't exactly wake up to the sounds of the creaky opening of a distant door, or else he would have noticed the nighttime excursions when they'd first begun.

But he does awaken to them eventually, perhaps as a result of the creaking door being more creaky than normal. He doesn't think much of it the first time; in fact, Siwon gives the odd sound a second's thought before falling back asleep, just as the normal person would.

But after three straight nights of the weird noise, Siwon begins to get curious. He notices that the sound always occurs ten minutes before midnight, though it's not an observation he'd been seeking to make note of. He also realizes that he's the only one hearing the strange noises, because no one seems to make a big fuss about intruders the morning after.

On the fourth night he doesn't sleep, nor does he bother changing into pajamas. Instead he waits intently for the noise, quipped with a determination to oust their midnight intruder.

Except Siwon's plan goes to file thirteen, because the moment he hears the noise he pops out of his bedroom and finds no disturbance whatsoever. With dampened spirits and a confused conscience Siwon goes back to bed, but he doesn't fall asleep because his mind is at unrest: Either their intruder is incredibly stealthy, or Siwon's gone delusional and is only hearing things.

On the fifth night, Siwon tries a different approach, and instead of waiting out in his room he camps out in the dorm's bathroom. He peers through the sliver of a crack he's given himself, and yet again he's filled with the determination of finding the source of the noise.

And at last success is given to him, and at quarter to midnight Siwon notices a rather short figure pacing in the living room, collecting random things throughout the dorm before pulling on a coat. And it's only when the figure's got his hand on the doorknob that Siwon realizes his failure of the previous night, because the noise had come from someone leaving and not someone entering.

He only catches Ryeowook's face for a split second in the dark before he slips behind the door.

For a moment, in that same darkness, Siwon feels accomplished, his curiosity sated. But then his curiosity flickers to Ryeowook: Why was the man consistently taking midnight strolls? Where was he going?

And without thinking, Siwon bursts out of the bathroom to follow him.

It doesn't take long for Siwon to get Ryeowook back into view. For whatever reason Ryeowook takes the stairs down, and it takes all of Siwon's efforts to follow him down without making his presence known; the creaky stairs do little to his cause. Yet somehow he manages without getting caught, and as Ryeowook speeds out of the building Siwon follows in a safe distance.

Siwon follows Ryeowook to a local park, and as Ryeowook comes to a halt at one of the benches Siwon forces himself into the nearby bushes.

"I brought you scraps," Ryeowook's voice says to no one in particular, and before Siwon even considers risking a peak a small bark of approval fills the air.

A stray dog?

And at that moment, Siwon's hideout fails him, and with so little as a warning Siwon finds himself falling out of the bushes, landing in a heap on the paved pathway.

"Siwon?" Ryeowook asks, just as Siwon can hear the sounds of a frightful dog scurrying away. "What're you doing here?"

"Could ask you the same question," Siwon says weakly, picking himself to his feet. "It's midnight, you know, and you shouldn't be leaving without telling anyone. What if something happens to do you? It's not safe to be out alone in the dark--"

"Ease off on the bodyguard act," Ryeowook says with a laugh. Then, turning back to the bench, his voice drops into a whisper. "It's an abandoned dog, Siwon. He's got a tag, but when I called the owner they were more interested in getting my autograph than getting the dog back. And I, I felt bad for it, so I've been giving it food to eat so it doesn't starve."

"Ryeowook...."

"You're not going to tell the others, right?" asks Ryeowook suddenly, taking Siwon aback. "I mean, I don't think they'd have anything against the pup, but the fact that I've been sneaking food out...."

"Don't worry," says Siwon, extending an arm and placing it around Ryeowook. "I won't tell. You might if we head back now, though? -- it's late, and rather cold."

"...yeah."

At quarter until midnight on the sixth day Ryeowook is surprised to find Siwon waiting for him at the door, and he is amused if not unsurprised at the thick jacket Siwon is wearing. Bur Ryeowook doesn't ever ask Siwon why he's awake; he only hands the taller man the bag of food and leads the way to the park.

At firs the pup ("Rascal, what a terrible name," Siwon laments) takes fright of Siwon's presence, which only provides Ryeowook with amusement when the dog takes food from only him and not the new man. But eventually, on the tenth night, the pup begins to take a liking for Siwon too, and by the twelfth night Siwon has taken the dog's favor entirely.

While feeding the dog the two men talk. At first it's simple, with the response to "How was your day?" being the longest interchange of conversation. As days go on it progresses to "How did you find the dog in the first place?" and to "Why don't we just adopt the dog already?"

Siwon really doesn't know why Ryeowook doesn't adopt the dog, especially since the man already treats the dog like his own. But secretly he doesn't want the dog adopted, because if the dog becomes his then the reason for their daily midnight walks ceases to exist.

And for some reason, that prospect bothers him.

On the nineteenth day, the dog doesn't show up.

At first Ryeowook is surprised, pondering aloud why Rascal hadn't shown up as he typically did. Then Ryeowook is dejected, turning on the spot, insistent on going home, apologizing to Siwon for wasting his time. But it's then that Siwon holds onto Ryeowook's wrist, keeping him place and suggesting the notion of not leaving.

"It's nice out," Siwon says into Ryeowook's eyes. "It's only midnight. We have time."

They walk around the park, talking about anything and everything. At first Ryeowook only talks about the dog, and Siwon lets him do most of the talking. But eventually their conversation begins to take another path.

"I think everything happens for a reason," Siwon says unsurprisingly. "You meeting the dog, I mean. It's all part of God's plan. And the fact that he didn't show up... God must've planned that, too."

"And you catching me in the act of sneaking out?" Ryeowook challenges, and for a moment Siwon swears a mysterious glint in the back of his eyes. "You coming with me, you not letting me go back today. That all a part of his plan too?"

Siwon sighs, peering into Ryeowook's gaze, or at least as much as the park's lamps allow. But in the gloom of the night he can't make out Ryeowook's intentions, or even the intentions Siwon's mind wants and expects to find. So instead, at least for the moment, Siwon lets it go.

"Yeah, of course."

On the twentieth day the dog doesn't come yet again, though Ryeowook doesn't need to be told for the two to spend the night out on their own accord.

They spend an hour walking aimlessly around the park, though Siwon barely acknowledges anything being said. In fact, in retrospect, the only thing he knows he'll remember is their parting from the park.

"I really appreciate this," Ryeowook had said then, as they'd stepped out of park grounds and were on their way back to the dorms. "Accompanying me, feeding Rascal with me... all of that."

"I like being around you, so it's all right." And then, after having realized his words, Siwon's eyes widened, bringing his hands to his face in apology. "Ah, no, what I meant is--"

"Siwon," Ryeowook said quietly, and the taller man had immediately grew silent, nd as if on cue, the world around them had too grown silent. "Siwon, I...."

And without thinking Siwon turned, caught Ryeowook's chin with a gentle stroke of luck, closed his eyes, and brought the shorter man's lips closer to his own.

Neither man complained, and neither man made any mention of it afterwards. Neither man made eye contact, and neither man had said a word to each other for the rest of the walk home. But it wasn't painful, because Siwon had enjoyed it, because Ryeowook had enjoyed it -- and the quiet and embarrassed "thanks" upon entering the dorms had been enough proof of that.

Siwon still doesn't know the grounds that had driven him to kiss Ryeowook. But in the end he supposes that, like everything, it had all been a part of God's plan.

On the twenty-first day, Siwon and Ryeowook dare to hold hands while on their way to the park. And this time, Rascal is there to meet them with a cheery yelp.

And then, unexpected to both Siwon and Ryeowook, a second yelp follows Rascal's.

"Well look at that," Siwon says, squeezing Ryeowook's hand as he drops the bag of food to the dogs' level. "Looks like Rascal's found a lover, too."
