Getting to work [Jim's office; open!]

Feb 28, 2011 18:34

When Jim had first been assigned his temporary office the halls had been quiet, everyone speaking in hushed voices when they spoke at all, still reeling from the loss of so many people. In the weeks since, though, the fleet had begun to come alive again, and the empty offices had slowly filled in with newly-appointed or reassigned officers getting ( Read more... )

Nyota knocked at the doorframe, a small smile on her face. "Permission to enter, Captain?"

He looked up, smiling at that familiar (and beautiful) face. "Granted, of course." Jim stood up, waving Uhura into his office. "What can I do for you, Lieutenant?"

"I think the question is, what can I do for you? Lieutenant Uhura reporting as head of Communications," Nyota assumed a properly seriously mien.

"First of all, have a seat," Jim replied, motioning her to a chair. Once he was settled behind the desk he looked over at her appraisingly. He was confident he'd been right, pushing to have her as head of the department. But a small part of him wondered how they would get on, now that he was captain. As easy-going as he might choose to be when the situation allowed, he knew that the dynamics would shift between them. What he didn't know was how Uhura really felt about him being her commanding officer.

"I'm glad to have you on board," he told her sincerely. "I made sure you've your security clearance went through, so everything should be ready for you to go up and inspect your department. Did you receive the communications personnel roster I forwarded to you?"

Hikaru had been told that Kirk was working out of the admin building and it made him grin, the idea that the brash captain was surrounded by suits. But he wanted to see Kirk again, thank him personally for seeing that he was assigned back on board the Enterprise as lead helmsman. Flagship of the fleet.

McKenna as still pissed.

After asking around, it wasn't that hard finding the captain's office. He poked his head around the corner, but when Kirk didn't look up from his datapadd, he cleared his throat. "Afternoon, sir."

Jim glanced up, breaking into a broad grin when he saw who it was. "Sulu, come in," he said, going over to clap him on the shoulder. "Good to see you."

He hadn't seen Sulu since they'd returned, except in passing, but Jim had known he wanted him back on the Enterprise. "How are you doing?"

"Busy, sir," he replied honestly. Between finishing classes and taking all the examinations required to become fully qualified in all classes of starship shuttles (just in case), Sulu hadn't had a moment to himself to think.

"I wanted to thank you, Captain, if you had anything to do with my assignment. I think you knew how much I wanted to serve on board, and once I heard you were going to be captain -" Sulu's face broke out into a grin. "Congratulations, sir," he thrust out his hand toward Jim. "No one deserves this more than you do."

He nodded in agreement. "Yeah, same here." Between the debriefings and other meetings, he had completed those exams he'd needed to round out his qualifications, thankful like never before that he'd been so driven to get through the academy fast. Thanks to his overloaded schedule the past few years, he'd already completed almost everything. He'd had his hands full lately, regardless.

Jim cocked his head to the side as Sulu spoke, not sure what to say. That he'd seen Sulu's dedication, had nearly died with him in that free fall? And then Sulu grinned and stuck his hand out, and Jim took it automatically, grinning back. "I don't know about that," Jim said honestly. "But I'm here and I'm going to do my best. And... yeah, I asked for you. You did great out there, and I knew I wanted to serve with you again."

She figured she had to do it at some point or another. Intimidating as the man likely was, Nora was going to be on his ship. Standing outside his door, she straightened her shoulders and poked her head in. "Sir?"

Engrossed in sending a reply to Scott about the new power couplings the Chief Engineer had sent him a glowing, enthusiastic report about, it took Jim a moment to realize that soft voice had been speaking to him. Glancing up, he saw a young woman looking in the door and smiled warmly. "Can I help you?"

She looked nervous, Jim observed. He motioned to a chair across from his desk. "Please, have a seat. Lieutenant...?"

Nora didn't - couldn't - answer for a second or so. She recognized that face. The image of the two people on her roommate's bed was burned into her retinas (and, permanently, into her brain).

"Lieutenant Tovik," she finally said, sitting down. "Lenora Tovik." What was she supposed to say? I've seen you naked? "Good to meet you, sir." That worked.

Jim's eyebrows rose slightly. He wasn't sure why Lieutenant Tovik was staring at him, though he'd certainly had enough of that over the past few months. Maybe it was just that, the curiosity he'd encountered now and then even from old classmates. "Good to meet you, Lieutenant Tovik," Jim replied with a grin.

"So you've been assigned to Enterprise, correct? What's your department?" She looked vaguely familiar, but Jim couldn't place her in any of his classes. Probably they'd just crossed paths at one time or another.

Smartass.

I'm bored as shit here. You'd think these fucking people think I've never seen a felinoid before. Talk talk talk.

Damn, Jim - that was amazing. I think I might have blacked out for a moment there. That thing, with the finger.

Great, now I'm hard. Shit.

You love my ass.

I'm meeting with crew this afternoon, but we seem to have hit a lull. Nobody here but me right now.

You did, in fact, black out. And if what happened after is my reward for having talented fingers, you can be damn sure I'll do that again. Fuck, Bones, I can barely sit still today.

... Yeah. Same here.

She still couldn't quite believe she'd been assigned to the Enterprise. It was a dream come true. And being assigned to her as the Captain's Yeoman...that was a post Jan had thought was years in her future, if she ever got received such a prestigious assignment.

That awe didn't make it any less nerve wracking to meet her new Captain. Straightening her uniform, she hesitated a moment, before knocking on the door jam of Kirk's open door, waiting for permission to enter.

He was going back over the Security roster when the knock sounded. Looking up, Jim gave the blond woman a broad smile. "Can I help you?"

Damn, she was good-looking, that effortless sort of look he'd come to realize some women spent a lot of time and effort to obtain. Jim might be in a brand new relationship, but that didn't prevent him from appreciating beauty when he saw it.
