Working off some stress

Jim didn’t know exactly what he expected to find, but he was restless and tired of thinking and talking and trying to understand everything that had been thrown at him so far here in Asgard. He needed to just shut all of it out for a while. To clear his head ( Read more... )

While he had been lonely and unoccupied (unvisited), Spock had taken various weapons and tools to examine for their energy sources, several staffs and one jeweled sword included. Darcy had been wary; Loki, on the other hand, publicly decried this investigation (because they all seemed to be his weapons), and Thor said that it might be better if they were returned before another fight took advantage of their placement.

Not that he could carry all of them down at once. No, for his first shipment he brought the sword and a glaive, the former hanging at his hip and the latter held in hand, the curved, glowing end pointed out in front of him. (If he had a little more time, he might be able to really deduce why it glowed, not simply by "magic.")

He saw Jim the moment he stepped in, and paused in the archway, setting the butt of the glaive against the ground (lest his arm tire). "Is there something you were looking for, Jim?"

His hand was reaching out to trace the carvings on the shield when he heard that familiar voice. Turning, Jim observed Spock, the sword at his side and the spear with its glowing tip in his hand. Eyebrows raised, he stepped toward him. "An outlet," Jim admitted. He walked over, studying the weapons.

"Are these what Loki was yelling about?" Jim had heard the commotion, but with so much else on his mind he hadn't paid close attention. His focus over the past few days had been splintered, worry and then elation for Bones' cure, and then the hard questions his encounter with Thor had prompted making him weary and introspective.

"Indeed." Spock stepped as Jim stepped, moving over to a display rack against the wall where there was a conspicuous vacancy from one adorned staff to the rest. He set it into the groove, and a band of light looped out to hold it.

Jim's answer was peculiar, though, especially given the setting, and Spock looked at him for a moment, studying him, as one hand rested on the hilt of the sword. "Did you want to use this equipment?" And then he took a step closer to Jim, still cool and curious. "Have you ever handled such weapons?"

Jim studied the jeweled hilt of the sword, wondering if the way Spock's hand rested there was accidental or a product of the sort of training of which he spoke. It looked easy and natural. "Nothing so grand," Jim told him. "I did well enough in my defensive courses, but I've never used anything like this."

He glanced up when Spock moved closer. "Was that an offer?" Jim hadn't considered actually using anything he had seen in here so far, but the idea of sparring with Spock was appealing.
