Leonard paced behind Jim. He knew this was necessary, he'd planned out his own words, should he be required to explain the circumstances. They had Geoff's reports ready, their own statements - but in truth, all that mattered was that the face on the other end of the channel.

The screen began to blink, and Leonard's stomach tightened. One hand clasped Jim's shoulder, giving him a firm squeeze before he sat down behind Jim.

A few moments later the screen went from black to the image of a man sitting at a desk. "Captain Kirk," Admiral Rodriguez said, his eyes still on a report in front of him.

Slowly he looked up at Kirk, an air of 'why are you wasting my time' in his demeanor. "What can I do for you this afternoon?" he asked crisply, his dark eyes flashing at Leonard in the background.

"Admiral Rodriguez." Jim nodded at the other man, satisfied on one point. He wasn't as familiar with Rodriguez as with some of the other admirals, but he had the reputation of being no-nonsense. Some people called him a hardass. "I have something of an... unusual situation to discuss with you."

Jim cleared his throat before continuing. "I've sent you a summary of the brief filed with Command regarding Enterprise's recent activity. Something of a personal nature has arisen since the brief was filed with Command." He exhaled slowly, keeping his face neutral despite the fact that his hands gripped the arms of his chair tight. "Admiral, before I continue..." Jim paused to collect his thoughts, aware of Bones sitting behind him and grateful for his presence. "I'd like to inquire as to the fleet's current position regarding the presence of family members aboard Constitution-class vessels."

"Family members?" The Admiral's face frowned. "Do you mean having family members visiting you while you are on board?"

He leaned back in his chair. "Traditionally, its been allowed, provided the ship doesn't have a mission that takes them near known combat situations."
