Scotty had received the information regarding Starfleet's latest order, but hadn't given it much thought beyond a shake of his head. Families in space... he knew some ships functioned well that way, but the Enterprise wasn't equipped for that sort of 'lifestyle'.
Or so he thought. One glance at Kirk's memo and everything became clear. They didn't want to lose their golden boy... but- a baby? A scan of the ship's sensors turned up Kirk's location, and soon Scotty was sitting in front of the captain. "So," he asked in a friendly tone, his eyes curious, darting everywhere. "Which one of you is the Mum?"
He hadn't been sure who would seek him out first. Jim cracked a crooked grin when Scotty plunked himself down. He should have known his Chief Engineer would have come looking for him, given the changes that were coming for the ship.
"I'd say the obvious answer is neither," Jim pointed out, his eyes steady as he saw how Scotty was having trouble knowing where to look. "But I'm... pregnant, yeah." He bit the inside of his cheek. "That going to be a problem?"
His voice was light, but Jim couldn't entirely hide his worry.
"Logistically I can see several problems," he murmured low, one eyebrow arching slightly as he glanced at Kirk's abdomen area. How was that supposed to happen? "But I'll leave that to the good doctor and the rest of his crew. I'm more concerned with our timetable for getting family quarters constructed. Have you seen the proposed design plans that Starfleet has sent out?" he asked, incredulous. "Not to mention, the added dilemma of having the family belong to the Captain."
Scotty leaned back on one hand, clicking his tongue and looking a bit put-out. "I congratulate you and Doctor McCoy. But I'm going to have to get started yesterday on making your rooms ready."
Jim nodded. He was aware that Starfleet had, as usual, taken a concept and run with it. "I'm sorry for that," he told Scotty. He didn't like the idea of creating extra work for anyone, but the plans were extensive, to say the least. "And yeah... logistically speaking, it's going to be an interesting few months. Bones and M'Benga are on top of things, though, so I'm... good
( ... )
Jim's spot wasn't too hard to find, once Leonard found a computer terminal. Seeing the picnic basket was a nice surprise, but the expression on Jim's face wasn't entirely peaceful or serene. "Hey," he said, dropping down next to Jim, stretching his legs out in front of him as he leaned in for a quick kiss. "How are you?" - the question having so many meanings right now.
The kiss hello did a lot to improve Jim's frame of mind. He gave Bones a faint, crooked grin, but that anxiety wasn't quite gone. "I'm okay," he began, then paused. He bit his lip, shrugging as he tried to pinpoint how, exactly, he wasn't.
"I feel fine," he rushed to explain, the note of concern in Bones' voice evident even if he was trying to hide it. Jim leaned against him as Bones settled into place and laced their fingers together. "It's just exhausting, the idea of having to explain to everyone, saying the same thing over again."

Read your message, Captain. What's this about a baby? Perhaps we need to discuss.

I thought 'discussion' was what got us into this in the first place. Come find me anyway. I have food.
