[ Background/History ]
Seventeen years ago, on December 12, the Hihara family welcomed their second bouncing baby boy, Kazuki. Kazuki grew up a fairly normal life, living with his parents, and Haruki, his older brother by two years. In grade school, he discovered a love for running, and joined the track team. He would remain in the track team throughout grade school, and into junior high. However, in the summer of his 7th grade year, he’d discover another love: the trumpet.
Kazuki and his friend Yu were intending to eat lunch on the school roof one day, when they found that the roof was already taken, by a fellow student practicing the trumpet. While Yu left, Kazuki remained behind and watched as the girl, Yayoi, continued to play. And he came back the next day, and the day after, and the day after that. Finally, one day Yayoi brought another trumpet that she borrowed from the band room, for Kazuki to try. He was horrible at it, of course, but he enjoyed it.
Meanwhile, with the track team, a big meet was coming up, and Kazuki had earned himself one of the few spots available. However, the pressure being put on him to beat his time in the sprint was making running less fun for him. So he made the decision, just before the meet, to resign from the track team.
Yu was angry with Kazuki, but Kazuki enjoyed running for the sheer joy of running, not for contests and races and meets. At the meet, when Yu was about to run, Kazuki climbed up on the barrier, with his trumpet, and played to encourage Yu. Well, played as much as he could, until he got chased away, since he wasn’t supposed to be standing up there. After Yu came in second place, Yu realized why Kazuki had to quit the track team, and why he’d picked up the trumpet. Kazuki didn’t want structure, he wanted freedom. Freedom to run, freedom to just release and express himself as he wanted to.
For the next two years, Kazuki improved his trumpet skills, and, in 9th grade, decided that he wanted to go to the prestigious Seiso Academy, which had a normal general education track, and a music track. His family doubted his ability to get into Seiso, but he proved them wrong. On his first day, Kazuki was running late, and had to ask another student for directions to the auditorium, since he didn’t know where he was going. He thanked the person he thought was an upperclassman, and, during the entrance ceremony, was surprised to find out that the boy was in the same grade as him!
Kazuki’s life changed, though, at the beginning of his third and final year in high school. Every few years, a concours was held at the school, and Kazuki was one of the six people chosen, along with his best friend Azuma (a flutist), a second year (violin), and two first years (cello and clarinet). Wait, did I say 6? Those five were just the music students. Shocking to everyone in the school, gen-ed student Hino Kahoko had also been chosen. Kazuki welcomed her with open arms, and even helped her out when she was being picked on by other music students.
The first selection didn’t go too well for Kazuki, leaving him in 5th place, just ahead of Kahoko. This depressed him, but, true to form, he bounced back. At the training camp for the concours participants that was held over vacation, Kazuki felt something stirring in him, and realized that he was starting to have feelings for Kahoko, which confused the heck out of him, because she was a girl, and girls were different than guys!
For the second selection, Kanazawa-sensei, the teacher in charge of the concours, made a deal with Kazuki. If Kazuki could place within the top three, Kanazawa would treat Kazuki to an all-you-can-eat buffet. This, of course, was the perfect motivation for Kazuki, and he managed to finish in 3rd place, this time behind Kahoko, and the surprising addition after the first selection, Tsuchimura, who was also a gen-ed student.
Between the second and third selections, Kazuki probably did the best job of all the participants in the concours in balancing his school work, musical practice, and finding time to hang out with his friends. He also, after a few more meetings with Kahoko, realized that the feelings that he was having for her were him falling in love, although he didn’t know how to express that to her, and it came out as embarrassment.
In the third selection, Kazuki completely fell apart, and only the fact that Kahoko broke her strings and couldn’t complete her performance saved him from being in last place. After the selection, he reflects on how he was distracted by concern for Kahoko, and gets very depressed. He thinks about how he didn’t do well, because he wasn’t enjoying his performance.
Kazuki’s conflicting emotions between his feelings for Kahoko and his performance and lack of enjoyment confuses him, and even Azuma notices that something’s wrong, and encourages him to say how he feels. He tries to talk to Kahoko, but isn’t able to say the right thing, and ends up more confused. Eventually, though, he was able to play a duet with Kahoko again, and realized that as long as he can play with her, he can save tell her at a later time, and just enjoy things as they are then.
Sooner than it felt like it should, though, the fourth selection arrived, with Kazuki content if he could just play for the person he wanted to cheer with his trumpet.
[ Personality ]
To put it simply, Kazuki is what would come if you gave Tamaki a trumpet and he actually knew what the 3rd Music Room was intended for.
Kazuki’s best compared to a puppy. He’s loyal, he’s friendly, he’s energetic, and if you kick him, he’ll bounce back. He describes himself as ‘all over the place’, and he has a certain innocent quality to him.
Kazuki is fiercely devoted to his friends, and has a very broad range of who he considers a friend. He’d never knowingly hurt someone, and, if he feels that he has (whether he did or not), he goes out of his way to apologize to them and make sure there’s no hard feelings.
When Kazuki does get into a funk, it takes him a while to get back into things. Once you manage to snap him out of it, though, it’s as if he was never depressed in the first place.
Kazuki can appear to be flighty at times, and easily distracted, but he always stays true to himself. Kazuki’s “archetype” is the lovable dork. But this doesn’t mean that he’s stupid or a ditz. He’s intelligent and thoughtful, and would do anything for his friends.
[ Specialties and Abilities ]
Kazuki is a skilled trumpet player, who has been playing the instrument for 6 years. He’s also a skilled runner, and continues to run even though he is no longer in track.
