The apple guys will probably tell you this too, but if you hold the middle button and the top button together (menu and ok?) or perhaps it is the middle and the bottom buttons together for about 5 seconds, it hard resets the iPod. I too have a nano and it does the same thing, but a hard reset will at least get it back to working in only a few seconds, rather than waiting for it to drain the battery.

This time I had an extra problem on my hands when I'd let it empty it's fuel and tried connecting it to the computer. As soon as I did, iTunes announces I would have to restore the iPod, and nothing else would do in the matter. Irritating, I had to copy everything to it again (I do so manually because of the lack of space) and tweak the settings and all.
Yep yep yep, I felt time was ripe for rekindling this little book of thougths:)
I remember, you had the 2nd generation iPod, yes? The one with the four touch-buttons between the screen and the scroll-wheel? 3+ times in a few years is much better than on the Nano it seems, with mine at least freezing 5-6 times in 2 months! :(
