I do enjoy how often in the videos that Guard was actually proc'ing.
Would you think, although this would be really annoying, that you could macro your Guard setup right before the mob attacks and see if it'll make an effect? Basically switching between Solo attacking setup and Guard setup just to see if this would prove to be more efficient is what I'm curious about. Probably would be blinking to an extreme amount though. I can see in the video that you're just demonstrating how guard is proc'ing by not blinking gear, but I'm just curious that if the delay on the mob's attacks are slow enough, that if this is a possibility.

I think it's possible but most of the times it will probably be impractical and problematic just because of things like lag from the server. So even if you can guess when the next attack is coming and you can hit the macro in time, the gear swap and the attack hitting you might actually happen at different times on the server even if everything looks right on your screen.
"the gear swap and the attack hitting you might actually happen at different times on the server even if everything looks right on your screen." Gear swaps are instant and the servers are quite efficient at sending you information. I know this from dancers AF body macros (Dancers should know about it too).
Also, if you change in gear everytime you got hit, why have gear for inbetween those times? sounds a complete waste of time :P
howver, still I agree - it would be completely impractical.
The part that is inefficient about server-client is not the gear swap, Monk has to gear swap for every JA and every WS and that works fine. However the information that is not so reliable is the time when you see yourself get hit vs when you are actually hit on the server. You probably have seen this go out of order many times, like when you hit on a macro and it says "you can't do that while dead", and your screen still shows you alive for a few more seconds as various animations catch up to what is actually happening. So it's easy and safe to do something like swapping gear before and after a JA (even for /DNC), but it's not so reliable to try to hit your macro right as you see the animation of the monster hitting you, because it's probably too late by then and you have already been hit on the server.
Well, it can also be a good thing that it is a turn off to some :P, there should still be a difference between someone who just started playing monk and someone who has been playing it as their main job for a long time (besides experience/knowledge/skill).
mnk guard idk so bad nice 2 knowlf_wtfAugust 25 2008, 04:40:19 UTC
I have mained mnk since my start. I luv my mnk. But at lvl 37 my guard cap iz 100+. Since reading this I have brought my guard from 57 to 60. I have been havin a problem with easy and dec cuasin way 2 much damage. I hope this will change things. I have noticed a bit of dif in sea serpent grotto. I hope 2 solo and raise some more. My sub since I aquired it iz sam. I luv tha dodge 3rd eye combo. Not 2 mention tp store ability since a mnk damage and ws iz so bad to tha bone but I've been wonderin if it iz my sub as well. Idk.
Guard skil upsext_93456April 19 2008, 00:55:39 UTC
I've been leveling my Guard skill inadvertently as MNK/THF farming in Crawler's Nest and Beauc Glacier farming hides, beetle parts, etc getting various crafts to 60. It's still only 89 though which is higher than the ridiculous 62 it was before, but still makes Parrying seem easy. MNK/DNC sure is nice though.
I was reading through some of your entries from waaaay back, and you showed a parse with Kirin's Osode ahead of Shura Togi in a parse of otherwise equal MNKs. Would that still probably be true? I've got an Osode already, and I'm curious as to whether buying a Cursed Togi (and waiting for Kirin to drop D.body Abj) would really be worth it now?
Re: Guard skil upsgenomeffxiApril 19 2008, 03:36:02 UTC
Yes, it depends on a few things like monster stats, bard songs, etc, but it's also just easy to understand the bonus given by togi (just a straight boost of acc and atk), while osode is often underestimated because it gives bonuses on many additional things (like critical hits, base fSTR, plus all the defensive stats etc
( ... )
