WARNING THIS MAY OFFEND
Faithful readers,
Normally when I post a message to livejournal it's usually some strange, silly, and often-times sarcastic diatribe which is rarely meant to be taken seriously.
But today, I come bearing
disturbing news. The point of this article is a claim that ours is the most narcisistic generation... ever. Surely this news should be little surprise to you, dear reader. But if you doubt it's premise, just check out your friends page. You can find on a regular basis the most self indulgent, banal, whining you can possibly imagine.
The very fact that such a thing as a livejournal AND myspace AND hi5 AND friendster AND ringo AND a million blog programs exist shows that we all (myself included) think a little too much of ourselves.
Do you think the generation that fought WWII would have made this had they the technology?
I was once told that the easiest way to determine emotional maturity and depth of character is to see how often in a typical conversation one says the words "I, me" or "myself." Sure their may be more qualifications to this, but the idea behind it seems to hold water.
Please do not get discouraged if you find that you too have this problem. You are not alone in this. I, myself was quite disappointed to realize how Scott-centric I have become.
But do you know what seperates you and I from every other self-obsessed, ego-holic in this me-first nation? While we share this personality flaw... we realize that it IS a flaw, (and not just of other people). What seperates you and I from everyone else is that we're going to do something about it dear reader. We're going to work together to fix it within ourselves.
And to obtain this goal I have a new thing to give up for lent. This lent I REFUSE to talk about myself on livejournal or myspace. That means no more updates on what I'm doing, what turns my life is taking, or pieces solely dedicated to my opinion.
Im sure some of you may take issue with this premise. You may believe that livejournal is more than just a means to create a whole online world dedicated to you -- you may claim its also an easy way to keep up to date with your friends for instance.
Thats sheer laziness. We both know youre just too lazy to call and catch up. Don't worry I am too. Im almost willing to guarentee none of you would care enough to call me (other than to spite this article and somehow prove that you DO care about those around you).
But deep down you know the truth... it's all about you, and everyone else who thinks that way about themselves has their head up their //censored for other lent promise//
So let me be the first to tell you... you're not special. you're not that smart, talented, interesting, and youre kinda plain looking. Your welcome!
