Food.

I'm filled with rage at the state of our food system.

This isn't a new thing, but I've been ignoring it recently. Yesterday I went to Willy St Co-op for the first time in months. I was blown away to remember how much good, real food is locally available, sustainably produced and ethically sold. Sold for a price that make most people's eyes widen ( Read more... )

I can't wait until the south side farmers market starts up this spring, and I can get my gigantic bag o' salad greens for $1. Nom nom nom. And I can plant my garden again. Infinite green beans o'clock! Also real tomatoes, not the terrifying mutants I found at Woodman's last month. Roma tomatoes should NOT be the size of beefsteaks.

I find an interesting echo of Judaism's "eating is holy" in Michael Pollan's "Eating is a profound and sacred act." It is a profound and sacred act, and people need to be aware of what exactly you are putting into your mouth. Always. You can eat plenty of junk while keeping Kosher, but at least you know (and are always conscious of) what junk you're feeding yourself.

Question, because this seems like something you'd know: what does "shehakol" literally translate to?

"shehakol nehiyeh b'dvaro" roughly translates to "all exists because of your word" where "your" refers to Hashem.

"shehakol" is an inflection of "kol" meaning "all", "nehiyeh" is a conjugation of the verb "hayah" meaning "to be", and "b'dvaro" comes from the root d'var, meaning word. With really fun tenses in there with the inflections/conjugations. I want to say it's subjunctive? It's not your standard past/future/imperative.

You are awesome. Thanks so much! I've been looking everywhere for a good translation.

Yes, yes, yes. To this whole post.

Another book to add to your list:

Jonathan Safran Foer's "Eating Animals"

I am dreading moving out of California, for only two reasons: the national park service, and the food. Specifically, the fact that every single town out here has at least one farmer's market, every single weekend. Sustainable meat is a little harder to come by, especially given California's potential ecological peril. It's all incredibly cheap, too, because there's so much demand for it.

I'm really nervous about moving back to the midwest and finding this part of the culture lacking. I guess it'll be Whole Foods o'clock?

Amen, sister. You start with the food production system, I'll start with the healthcare system, and we'll meet in the middle. :)
