Interesting discovery at work yesterday which has rolled onto today. The building got set up with a wi-fi connection, apparently no-one bothered to mention this to anyone outside of the IT staff. Rather fun as it appears that somehow it is interrupting the Fire Alarm system, something to do with the fact that they are both radio based and the two sets of signals are just not getting on. So much so that the fire alarm is going into fault. The problem is that after five separate faults i.e. five devices, are recorded by the alarm system it goes off - working on the not unreasonable belief that it is currently being burnt to the ground. Still not entirely sure how this going to pan out but it is entertaining watching the email spitball competition between Facilities/ M+E and of course IT.
There is a really nasty part of me that is tempted to go put a couple of lumps of chicken wire or tin foil around some of the radio heads just to confuse the situation more but I’m not sure if I can be bothered.
Otherwise the ongoing un-British summer is reducing peoples’ tempers in our glorious non-air conned building. Sometime this morning (around 6.30 by the looks of things) two of our cleaners decided it was time to tear chunks out of each other, one of them is sat at UCL as we speak with some interesting fractures and cuts and the other is, or was at least down at Charing Cross nick. The only problem with this is I have a nasty feeling that one of them is an illegal and that the contractors may have been less than honest with their paperwork. Oh, and the cause of this little domestic (no pun intended) one of them used the others vacuum cleaner and didn’t empty the bag - go figure.
