It takes a great understanding of one's self to gain that feeling. Too much focus on what is not important clouds our view, and it lessens the beauty.
To answer your question, I believe seeing one's self ugly at times is worse. If you cannot have a high opinion of yourself, then why expect anyone else to think highly of you?

In this world it can be so hard for anyone to see their beauty, its so refreshing to be able to appreciate what we are...how what inside plays with what is seen on the outside and how it can shine through the soul to create three dimensional beauty. To be in tune with yourself and the world enough to see through all the "stuff" and appreciate the beauty is so hard...requires vulnerability and understanding.
