In homage to causality, the future is, right now, slipping inexorably into the past ( Read more... )

A lot of suffering comes from people's delusions that they exist as a person outside of their socialization. Once you realize that there is nothing below your conditioning and there's nothing subjective human nature, you've improved your life significantly. If you must feel some bullshit feeling of individuality, your genetics are unique. When approached with a situation, you will react with what you've learned modified by your genetics (genetics are like a formula). Rorty and maybe Caputo are good for this kind of thing. Modern day philosophers are pretty cool, I say, even if everyone hates them.

What was the painting called?

There's this really interesting thought experiment which is sort of along the same lines, although more on a biological basis.

It's sort of hard to explain, but there are these imaginary vehicles and you infer that they have certain behaviors based on the way that they move in their enviornment. Seems logical enough until you construct a really complicated one and then you end up with hm...all human behavior could easily be the result of a mass of simple and pre-determined biologically based behaviors.

It all depends on what you are looking at, a meaningless biological perspective or a meaningless sociopsychological perspective. Those biologically based behaviors are based off of chemistry, so you can have a meaningless chemical perspective.

As for these 'vehicles', it just sounds like a heuristic with the attempt to define one. Neural networks in CS, too. Regardless, the various schools of science arguing about the same thing and agreeing with each other just in different languages is not a good thing. Stupid meaninglessness, making it impossible to standardize anything truly.
