Lamont-Doherty building in Palisades evacuated

The acid leak in my building was about 30 feet from my room, though I never smelled anything and walked out the nearest door which was away from the leak. The talk on the scene was that it was hydrofluoric and perchloric acids.

I hear hydrofluoric acid is bad, bad, bad stuff.

From what I've read, spilling it on yourself in concentrations of 10% or higher is fatal. It breaks down oxides, particularly the calcium in the bones.

If you'd smelt HF, your lungs would have been mincemeat already. Not that so far as I know either has an odour.

Eek. A few people in the area did smell it. Andy is quoted as saying it smelled like HCl though.
