flashback: he did what now?

If it hadn't been for the fact that the streets were all but deserted at this usually busy time of year leading up to holidays when Hogwarts students, recently freed from the chains of studying and exams for a quick reprieve, and that half a dozen stores down their end of Diagon Alley alone had their doors boarded up and layers of dust collecting ( Read more... )

Lavender had been a mess for twenty-four hours now, ever since she received the letter from Alex the night before, warning her that now might not be the best time to come home for Winter Holiday. She'd already been packed when the news had arrived, ready to get herself into bed and prepare for the long train ride home the next day. It had already been a long year at Hogwarts, so many changes made and the fear growing as things just became steadily worse. All she wanted to do was go home for Christmas and forget about the whole thing, see Roger after the six months they'd been apart, only a few quick letters here and there.

It was the longest they'd ever gone with out speaking but she had expected that with the break up, the two of them realizing that it really was the best thing for them, even after spending as much of the summer together that they could. His schedule was just too busy and she had other, much more important, things to focus on back at Hogwarts.

But this- well, this she never expected.

That initial confusion at seeing her only doubled at the sight of her glassy eyes, then tripled and quadrupled as he spotted her trunk and took the wrinkled letter she held out towards him. Still, as he quickly glanced down to skim the scrawled handwriting, he instinctively stepped aside to let her inside, tucking his wand back up his sleeve and pulling the door open more widely than he had allowed for with that initial careful opening (he didn't imagine that Death Eaters or other less-than-friendly persons would have the politeness to knock, but still, one couldn't be too careful these days).

"Hey, alright, it's okay, c'mon in, what's-" he started to ask just as his eyes caught and smashed together a few key words.

It felt like she'd been struggling to breath since the previous night, her lungs struggling and burning as her chest rose and fell. There was a heaviness in her chest that she had never felt before, crushing and intense, like her whole world was just crashing down around her.

Nothing made sense to her anymore and everything was just spinning. Spinning, spinning- right out of control and just picking up speed.

But as George took her in his arms, when she breathed him in, things began to slow down, just enough for her to get a handle on herself. She knew that this was the right choice, that he would know exactly what to say or what to do, anything to help her cope or distract her.

"I got it yesterday-" she started, burying her face into his strong chest.

"He didn't even tell me himself. All our letters-"

"Hey, it's alright- it's okay-" George muttered, mostly for a lack of anything better to say as he lightly stroked a hand through her hair.

When it came to Roger and the way he fit into Lavender's life, he had always been at a bit of a loss. He had gotten there first, a childhood friend that had known her before she had been that gawky little blonde thing slyly following he and Fred around, catching them mid-prank setup in some deserted hallway in the middle of the night and essentially sassing herself into being allowed to take part in their shenanigans. Before she had been an pain in his neck, then an amusing annoyance, then ultimately one of the best friends he could have asked for, she had been Roger's, and that whole tumultuous romance of theirs had always been rather confusing yet unavoidable ( ... )
