Today I finished Against Nature by Huysmans. There is a postscript written after he became catholic. What a hypocrite. Lately it has occurred to me that although the book is obscene from the point of view of its decadence, the fact that it is a work of fiction and written in different times and concerns a member of a social class which no longer ( Read more... )

Maybe pelicans symbolise Jesus 'cause they can fit loads of fish in their beaks and thus to some extent replicating the effect of Jesus' seemingly miraculous production of loads of fish when he fed the 5000?

Nice try, but they supposedly pull flesh from their own breast to feed their young in the absence of other food. Remember what you were saying recently about the catholic church being morbidly fixated?
Are you two coming out on Thursday? Also, is Michael doing something to celebrate graduation?

Hmm, hadn't thought about Thursday. I think not because I have an IT test on Friday morning for my ECDL course.
We're gonna have a big garden party on Saturday 28th May, to celebrate end of exams and late birthdays. So book the Sunday off work and stay all night!

My dear, all these acronyms! I have written the date on the calendar for the garden party.

I have just been told that my application for the masters course has been accepted. So no more His Master's Voice bellowing in my ear. Now I can apply for another job to start in September. I can stop worrying about whether he had even received the application.

I am fighting, fighting the desire to explain why a pelican symbolizes Jesus. Must hold out.

Dogs symbolize Jesus because the dog returns to his vomit, and Jesus returned to us after we crucified him. We are god-vomit, a vivid, unpleasant simile, I always thought. Unicorns symbolize Jesus, because, as a unicorn's love and pity for a young girl binds it to be killed by hunters, Jesus was bound by his love and pity for Mary. OK, I think I can stop now.

I thought if I wrote down the explanation for the pelican it would spoil the strangeness of it. Now, having forgotten it I've just spent ten minutes trying to think what the explanation was, and I'm sure it's that pelicans supposedly pick flesh from their own breast in order to feed their young in the absence of other food. As did Jesus when he was crucified etc. Isn't that macabre? I have removed your temptation to explain the holy pelican by yielding to it myself.
