The masses

I'm not sure who's stupider; the rappers who call themselves "musicians" and produce "music", or the masses that actually buy this drivel and help these people gain wealth, fame, and everything else. Then they go and do some more stupid things to get more press. Aren't these people called "attention whores"? Or are they just self-centered and ( Read more... )

I should've put two disclaimers on my editorial: Present readers exluded from being part of 'the masses', and that this point of view comes from a musician, and any respectable musician does not consider rap "music".
But I still don't agree that there are some good rappers out there. That's like saying there are tall midgits, or skinny John Goodman's. It's a contradiction in terms. There might be some good R&B singers out there (which I still have reservations about, but that's another post), but not rappers. I mean, how many times have they mentioned 'rap' specifically in the Watchtower magazines? Some common topics of rap "music" include violence, sex, achieving riches, sex, fame, sex. Did I mention they talk about sex a lot?

But anyways, I'll get off my soapbox now. Can you imagine the reaction I'd get if I posted my full theory on the rap industry? oooh...
*thinks to self - might make a good thesis paper*

Yup yup. But I'll have to go back and search, because I remember you mentioning it, but I don't remember exactly what it was you said.

You didn't like it, did you? O.O

As I like to say "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter how wrong it is."

I think rap is similar to any genre, at least to my own senses. Most of what is put out is only probably going to be appreciated by true afficianados (sp?) of that genre. But there are those exceptional pieces that somehow manage to transcend their genres and appeal to a far broader audience.

Also, while I don't care for most rap, I do sometimes appreciate when people try to merge it with other genres and sounds.

As for me personally, I tend to seek my new music out of interviews with emerging artists conducted at NPR. They have a knack for finding strange and wonderful new sounds from around the world.

hmmm... rap ... well in a sense it's also considered music because it has a rhyme that can be accompanied with melody and baang u have a song. u can make a song with a rap without instruments with the flow of words... open mic for instance people create their own rhythm by their pauses or speeding up their flow ( ... )
