stp via train?

Wondering why the train is so much more than driving. For one person, it's about $70 one way, round trip $140, and it takes five hours, plus the cost of transportation to the train station on both ends (if any... Probably negligible.). It's no different over here. You would think it would be different with petrol being $9/gal, butdriving or flying is often way cheaper... and that's in spite of a much higher population density, and a much more substantial passenger rail system. Oh, yeah... and unlike motorists who through the fuel tax pay their own way, those rail tickets are still subsidized ( ... )

But it's the underground, right? There's a board game, and everything! There just can't be snafus.

Did you hear about the train crash on the left coast here recently? They think one of the engineers was texting somebody at the time he went through his red light. And there was the train going to LA last month that just ran out of gas. Oooops.

As I've recently relocated to Tokyo from Seattle, I have to confess a profound love of the train system here. And on an almost daily basis I wonder "Why the hell can't we do this in the States, at least a little bit?" I know the density doesn't compare, and I'm sure there's lots of issues I'm breezing over, but... still ( ... )

Seattle doesn't have the population density. NYC certainly does, but city folks have little desire to go into the mountains to take a dip at the hot spring, it seems.
