I think there is a lot to be said for perspective. You can appreciate the greatness of America because you have a balanced perspective. You have seen what American is and you know what it is not. I believe there is such intense, almost fanatical patriotism because of the lack of alternative views. There is very little in Washington to indicate that America is anything less than a modern-day Roman or Ottoman empire. Powerful and great in every way. If I were born and raised in such an environment, I too would be venomously patriotic. Fortunately I wasn't. I can appreciate that honorable and respectable values remain at the core of what America stands for, but somewhere along the way, these noble roots got twisted into something that I don't believe the 'founding fathers' could have envisioned ( ... )

How is America anything less than a modern day Roman Empire? Rome was the greatest military, economic, and cultural power in the known world. How is America not those things now ( ... )
