I guess the difference between your "simpler" and your "more complicated" are that the simpler approach is all that's needed for going about life; the "more complicated" is what comes into play when people start theorising, and is effectively answering those who think they've got it all figured out? :)

(I do definitely like "we're trying to express an ineffable truth in human language and, what's worse, part of that ineffable mish-mash is fighting back, actively trying to deceive us into error".)

Do you know Tiffer? He made a post asking similar questions on Facebook recently - particularly similar to the "when something we dislike happens..." one. He was thinking about God's discipline, and how we can tell whether something unpleasant that happens is God's discipline or just a bad thing happening. He got lots of interesting replies. I said, is it even a meaningful distinction, if God works all things to our good? Nasty things happen and God uses them to teach us or develop our character; to ask whether he intended that all along or just repurposed something originating from Satan is probably a fallacy of our time-bound understanding of causality.
