I'm always somwhat in awe about Shige's writing in those essays, and love to read the translations.
Since I havn't seen this essay translated yet, I decided to give it a try . Maybe others like to read it as well, so here it is.

I would rather come down with an illness, than excessively injecting a vaccination against people. )

I can understand the mothers being protective on one hand, but on the other, I can also imagine how upset shige must have felt when being questioned and suspected like that. Of course there is not definite rule on how to detect perverts, so I guess it was just the result of some uber-wary parents, still a bit sad though :/ poor shige :/

I know, his last words made me smile :D

This is such a deep essay. Thank you for translating. What happened to Shige was sad but I'm glad he ended on a positive note, because he's often said to have a 'negative' outlook on things, LOL. It's heartwarming when he said he wants to believe in people.

Again, thank you for sharing :)

KoyaShige icon FTW! :D:D

Yeah he gets into such deep thoughts in most of his essays, but mostly finishes on a positive or somewhat lighter note. Like this one that made me smile in the end, even though I could imagine how sad and upset he must felt about the incident and beind suspected. I also admire his attitude on wanting to believe in people. I'm not uber-cautious and would consider myself quite open-minded, but I still wouldn't be able to put that much trust in just any other person, the way he describes it here.

More Koyashige icon XD

Yeah, I'm glad Shige ends up being hopeful :)

<3 for the icon.

yeah I would have been sad , if he would have ended it on something like "I won't dare to take any outside pics now anymore, incase there might be kids somewhere around ending up in the background of the photo."

I can see your point. I also think it's natural for parents to try and protect their children from any harm, and thus be wary of different kinds of people. And in my opinion it also always depends on the context of the situation and the individual people involved in it, and I guess the personal impression of others that everyone has. Some parents might be more wary of things than others ( ... )

Being suspected is not a good feeling, especially when you know you're not in the wrong.

Shige's words are always thought-provoking. It is indeed sad that some societies have progressed to the stage of "guilty until proven innocent" to protect the people..

Thanks for the translation!

By the way, I really like your icon. Do you have the original picture/magazine scan of Shige in your icon?

tehee...thanx, I like your icon, too. Mine is from the february issue of Popolo in 2009, where they all had different coloured lines run through their pictures. I can probably dig up the scan from somewhere on my harddrive if you can't find it, just let me know ;)

yeah, even though I know that all the parents have in mind is protecting their children, and even though I know that there are a lot of sick people in this world, I don't like the idea of going overboard with the "guilty until proven innocent" theory (as you called it so very fitting). I'm always thinking about , what if I'd be in such a situation...in fact I often go out to take pictures of the city I live in and the scenery, and I can probably pull up several pcitures with people and children being in the background or just who just happen to be in the picture, because they were walking by. It's scary to think that some people who think of someone as guilty right away, would have maybe wanted to call the police on me for that. :/

Thanks for pointing me to the magazine! I tried searching, but I can't find the scans.. Would really appreciate if you can upload the picture for me &haerts;

Indeed *nods solemnly* It's like, we're losing the basic trust in each other. Yet however, it's hard to pin point who is at fault because it had been previous negative cases to break the trust between people today.

I think it's fine, even if I was betrayed. I would rather come down with an illness, than excessively injecting a vaccination

yeah, he always manages to amaze me with his thoughts on different matters (and the way he expresses them) as well. So I say "hands down to Shige" *g*, because he wrote it. I just translated it (though I wish I could write like that, but unfortunately I have no talent in coming up with something awsome like he does)

i've read several of shige's essays and i can say he has a good sense of relating various things that supposedly aren't related, just like how he used vaccine in this essay. such great mind should be given more attention don't you think?!! LOL..XD

shige should be proud of translators, and i am too! without you guys , we won't understand wth they were talking about,.. hahaha.. that said, ♥♥♥s to you~ :)

well, THANK YOU then. *pulls out the special shige "thank you" icon*

exactly! I love how he is doing that nearly everytime, relating normally unrelated things, and I always feel like "now...I'd never have thought about comparing this to that". And this - his way of writing also makes it so understandable then (at least for me it does). :)
