Thanks for the reply. I know Týr, and even thought I kind of like them, most of their stuff is quite monotonic, sadly :) I'll give this "Rosenberg 7" a try.
I don't believe there's any tradition of throat singing in Europe.
The instrumentation's mostly more complicated and stringed-instrument-heavy than what it sounds you're looking for, but the first couple of albums from Garmarna ("Vittrad" and "Guds Spelemän") are quite brilliant. Hedningarna are quite fun, also.
Gåte (Norwegian) and Schandmaul (German) might be something for you...They're Folk Rock and thus use more often traditional instruments for a better effect. Usually they both have lyrics with medieval touches. Schandmaul got also instruments-only pieces once in a while and are more "folk" than Gåte. Oh yeah, Lumsk (Norwegian) fits quite good in with your discription, too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCFfuq_1iJA f.e.?
Aside from that...hmmm maybe try Odd Nordstoga, though that is not ancient. But simple with vocals and usually just with a guitar.
I think the problem is, that there isn't a real Germanic/Norse ethnic music, unlike in Asia etc where it has been a long tradition to practice and uphold their tunes. : /
Uh, I think that Blumfeld (German) can sometimes lean in a Folk-like direction. He has two songs that immediately come to mind called "Ich Fliege Mit Raben" and "Schmetterlings Gang". Other than that I would call classical composers very traditional German, Austrian, ect. music.
There's quite a lot of traditional folk music and post-industrial takes on folk music out there, usually dealing with traditional and pre-Christian Germanic themes

I'll try to listen to the others.
I was looking for stuff that aren't too much "rock" or "metal", but I guess if there isn't much of this, rock-folk will suffice :)
