I almost posted this as a status update on Facebook, but realized it deserved a real post so here I am on Livejournal!  I've noticed that more people are posting here again, which makes me happy.  Of course, this will automagically get sucked into FB as a note so people who've abandoned LJ will sill get to see it ( Read more... )

HURRAH! Is fun, yy? (She says as she sits with ice on her $#%@ shinsplit.)

OooOOo If you ever want to get involved in a class-type thing, I do a bootcamp-style class 3 or 4 times a week @ Encinal Park in Sunnyvale. I say bootcamp-STYLE because the instructor does not yell and is not a jerk. Everyone goes at their own pace and there's no judgy-judgy if you can't do something.

It's basically 1 hour with warmup jogging/jumprope, ab stuff, a workout that involves dumbbells, cardio, calisthenics, and then cooldown stretch. Lots of variety, rarely duping the same workout within a month. And it's OUTSIDE. There are weekday morning & evening classes, and one on Sat. morning. $10 drop-in, less if you buy a package of 12 classes. Anyway blabla let me know bla.

I tried running with Nicole a few weeks ago. She's doing the couch to 5K thing where you run / jog for a few minutes then walk for a few minutes with the ratio of run / walk eventually going to 100:0. Seems like a good plan, but after 2 runs my knees were complaining so I'm going to stick with low impact exercise, at least until I drop a few more pounds. If this doesn't involve a lot of jogging, I might give it a go.

Oh, I definitely know what you mean about the knees -- back when I weighed lots more, there was no way I could run or even do a lot of jumping on DDR. Ouch!

I'd say in any one workout there is at least 1/4 mile jogging (warmup) and then some more interspersed throughout. Some workouts have more than others, depending on what Buddy's planned for the day. BUT, if you can't jog because of your knees I am sure you could walk briskly instead. I have never seen Buddy make anyone do anything that would result in injury -- I do alternate exercises all the time because of my arm. Anyway, no pressure. I favor it because it's outside/I hate gyms/I like group activity, but I know not everyone is exactly like me.

I've gone from "couch potato nerd" to "gym 3 times a week and morning warm-up guy" in two years. It's odd too look back on the change, really. My self-image is only now catching up to reality ( ... )

my only caution - don't let the days you can't meet your goals stop you.
