Character Information
Name: Inui Sadaharu
Age: 31
Occupation(s)
Manager of a privately owned health food and nutritional supplement store. On the side, Sadaharu sells performance enhancing drugs, including human growth hormone and steroids.
Personality
You likely wouldn't notice Sadaharu in a crowd, save for his height. He is calm, collected, and observant: the perfect people watcher. Sadaharu has taken the skill of examination and turned it into an art form. He has an inquisitive mind and a general interest in the betterment of people and the world around him. His actions are very methodical and he is rarely spontaneous but ingeniously clever on those few occasions. Sadaharu is not a great conversationalist, and tends to bore people with useless trivia and knowledge-he's not at the top of the invitation list to parties. Sadaharu has a very dry sense of humor, but enjoys a good practical joke if the mood is right.
History
Sadaharu was a bookworm and an academically gifted child. His parents nurtured his talents for his schoolwork as much as possible, but always required him to remain physically active. He participated in a number of sports as a child which led to his interest in sports management and the development of the human body (he had more fun training for sports and improving personally than actually participating in them). He attended Kyushu University and holds degrees in business and kinesiology.
At university, Sadaharu met his future wife, Emiko, a pharmaceutical major. The couple dated for years before Sadaharu proposed. The couple now have a daughter, 6-year-old Yui. Emiko is the proprietor of a health-food and wellness store as well as owner and pharmacist of a community pharmacy, both inherited. As the pharmacy takes up much of her time, she has left the management and operation of the wellness store to Sadaharu. The family moved to the Tokyo area four years ago to manage Emiko's family businesses following the passing of her parents.
A troubled economy and mounting debt caused Sadaharu to seek alternative forms of income to maintain a comfortable lifestyle without having to move out of their new home. An avid sumo fan, Sadaharu began to collect match records and studied the individual styles of the wrestlers in depth. He began to bet on bouts and was fairly successful until a major match-fixing scandal broke, and Sadaharu lost several of his bets that had been placed on good faith consecutively. He attempted to let the debt ride through to the next tournament, but unable to make sense of which matches were being thrown intentionally, he fell further into arrears with the bookies. Burdened with the substantial losses and fearing the pressure of Yakuza to pay off what was owed, Inui used his contacts in the sports and supplements industry to begin selling steroids to athletes, bodybuilders and anyone else who needed or wanted to "juice." Never happy with this development in his life, he swore he would stop selling once his debt was paid off, but he found it was easier to keep the extra income than to give in to his morals.

Nipple guards. I was outsold by nipple guards. I guess it can't be helped, people need them. I spent seven hours at the convention center and I made, let's see... 25,000 yen. Less the rental of the van, tables, chairs, printing the new store banner, handbills for the store, paying the locksmith after leaving the keys in the van... we lost 6000 yen. Hopefully the store will have an increase in sales leading up to the marathon this coming weekend. There are only four days left. I wonder, would it help to extend the hours of the store for the rest of this week? Emiko won't be happy about it, but she knows how much we need to turn around sales this month.
It's unfortunate that the marathon fair had to occur on a weekday. Last year it fell on a Saturday and there were more attendees. Perhaps next year the event coordinator will actually submit the reservation application on time. The convention center seemed so empty despite the extra vendors who were allowed to set up on the south wall against the windows. It's eerily close to what the store has looked like recently. It's time for another sale to increase traffic, but on what? The kids aren't buying energy drinks as much anymore; I doubt they'll get excited over a 2-for-1 sale on flax seed oil. It's a shame, though. They could benefit so much from it.
Note to self: Stock up on flax seed oil.
Ritsuko was short on the register again today. I suspect she's stealing, but I'll have to replace that dummy surveillance camera with a real one to be sure. Yet another unexpected cost. We're going to need to make more money this week, leaving it for the rest of the month will be too late.
Note to self: Start carrying nipple guards.

The store shelves were packed with new products. The rackspace near the register was full of electrolyte-rich gel packets and the latest concoction of chemicals and fruits that had not yet already been paired with açai berry. The refrigerator was stocked with health and energy drinks that had strange names with even stranger contents. Vitamins and supplements were arranged by name, dose, quantity, and price. The register was adequately prepared with petty cash, and a reserve of bills to break larger denominations was in stock in the vault. Not a single product or item was out of place.
Inui took pride in the upkeep of the store.
It wasn't terribly difficult to keep the shop looking like it must have at its grand opening, however. It was noon and only a couple had come in asking for directions. It was too late in the day to hope that sales would increase, too early to start drinking. There were no managerial functions for Inui to attend to. Payroll had been completed at the end of last week and the sales reports had already been filed for last month. He could analyze the store layout and try to rearrange the products, but he was fairly sure the items were placed in the store to maximize exposure of the store's stock to any customers who might enter. The store's problem wasn't it's stock; it was the location. A decade ago the shop would have been in a better area, surrounded by thriving businesses and an upscale clientele. Without changing location, the store was in a different area entirely than at its opening. The city wasn't terrible around him, but Inui found it difficult to market and sell creatine and glucosamine while sandwiched between a pawn shop and one of those western chain hamburger joints. Inui was staring out the window at the other businesses that lined the street when the unfamiliar tone of the door entry sensor brought him back to the present.
"Welcome. How can I help you?"
A slight boy, no older than seventeen, stood in the doorway. He looked around the store nervously before speaking. "I'm, umm, I'm looking for Inui."
The boy didn't have to say anything else. Inui knew what he wanted. "I'm Inui. Is there something I can get for you?" Inui hoped the boy would chicken out and leave. So many kids his age did. It was a mixed blessing.
The door closed behind the youth as he approached Inui timidly. "I was, uh, I heard you could help me. I'm trying to bulk up…"
"There are a number of products in the store that you can use to promote muscle development and energy delivery during workouts," Inui interrupted. "I recommend that at your age…" Inui tried to make a sale. The store could use it, but it was the last thing on his mind at the moment.
"I was told you could help me with stacking." The boy grew bolder. He hadn't come in just to buy steroids. He was interested in everything and anything that would make him larger.
"The only products I have to offer for muscle growth are the ones on the rear shelf. Most are supplements to be added to food and drink, but some are pills to be taken at any time. Feel free to browse the selections and ask me if you have any questions about them." Inui wanted to give the boy one last chance to turn around and leave.
"I know you can help me. Nothing has worked for me yet."
Inui knew the boy had no intention to give up on his quest. At least he could offer him a safer experience than most dealers. "I'm closing the store today at five. There's a door around the back. Green. 15 minutes after five."
The boy stood, puzzled by the very words he wanted to hear. He wasn't sure what response was appropriate in such a situation. After a minute of awkward silence he turned and left the shop.
