Actually, it's almost the inverse: The shoes were pretty new, and thus had not been broken in much.

More importantly, my feet were not broken in enough due to having to take all of September and most of October off from the broken leg.

I basically trained 4 weeks for this race, which is an amazing feat of cardio conditioning but a terrible burden on the feet, tendons, and (possibly) knees.

It's kinda fascinating: most people can hold on to basic physical conditioning and strength for 4-5 months even if they stop constantly 'exercising', but foot callouses disappear pretty quickly with sloth. At least for those of us who like to take lots of salt baths and wear comft shoes and slippers everywhere. :o
