Does this undermine Bahls' stategic plan to improve Augustana? So much emphasis has been placed on getting Augie higher up on the college rankings list in the past few years, and then this happens. I don't doubt that the college will continue to waste money on things we ( Read more... )

Good point. I guess my frustration stems from the fact that so much emphasis is placed on getting our rankings up (which aren't to shabby to begin with) while there are, in my opinion, more practical issues that need addressing.

So you don't think we need a student center? Sigh...

Not when the music department (one of the biggest and most publicly viewed departments we have) has to deal with some of the poorest rehearsal and performance spaces I've seen for a college. I wouldn't mind a student center, but I think the administration has their prioreties screwed up. Establishing buildings, programs, orginizations, etc that we don't have is a good idea, but not at the expence of neglecting the already deterierating conditions of what is already here.

Augie already has a student center. It's called the Tredway Library. All I ever saw there was kids jacking around, but I'm sure there are exceptions. Like Buck said, the money needs to go into things that need fixing first before we try to build something new. And no, I don't think that building the new residence hall was a waste. It was fixing (or preventing) a problem that would have gotten worse with increased enrollment and the transformation of Carlsson. First on the list is Centennial Hell. I'm not even a music guy but that place is just a dump. It undermines the effort of the performers as well as the quality of their work which is pretty damn high compared to some of the places that have a representable venue. You want recognition (rank) for the school, the music department has been and is the means to do so. Give them the tools, and it will help the school much more than a student center would.
