(P.S. Last time I tried to avoid an obstacle on slush, I wound up tapping it at about 2 mph. No real damage to anything, but it sure is frustrating watching an impending collision in slow-mo.)

Are you sure about the not slamming vs. repeated tapping? Most cars these days have anti-lock brakes. With ABS, the car should turn a slam into a lot of repeated taps, resulting in a pleasant foot massage to compensate the driver for being in a scared-shitless situation. ;-)
