Some thoughts on the subjects of video games

I am an avid fan of video games. I play a lot of video games. I enjoy a lot of video games. Being such a diverse medium, many such fans have trouble picking favorites. Today, however, for no reason of real import, I decided to try and compile a personal top ten, and as I did so, I realized that it was more or less definitive. There's lots of games ( Read more... )

Hm. For the not-very-video-gamey among us, why are these your top ten? (Assume I have little to no understanding of any given series when explaining.)

I like them all for differing reasons. But the reason I love them is that they all have some quality - perfectly-honed gameplay, excellent storytelling, or what have you - that lets me always enjoy them, no matter how many times I may have done so before.

Comment on Persona: one interesting thing to do if you have a great deal of time (not that I recommend this) is looking at the difference between playing Persona 3 and then Persona 4, and doing it in reverse order. On my first playthrough, I thought the games were very similar, on my second, where I did them basically in reverse (actually I watched a friend do them), Persona 3 seemed so much more primitive. It's an interesting issue. Maybe I'll write about them one day.

But I'm not complaining about you grouping them together. They are very similar to the point of being two versions of the same game.

In other notes, the version of Planescape: Torment in the D&D anthology plays decently well in Windows 7 with no modification.

Persona 4's engine is certainly much more refined than 3's, and it's nice being able to actually control your party members for once. One thing I really wish they'd kept from P3, though, is the three different types of physical damage, that's something I thought was neat. Gave you a good incentive to diversify your party.

Oh gods. Top ten lists. I could never write one because I can never decide which I like more, regardless of the subject matter. Plus I keep forgetting/remembering things and go "oh right, that's really cool too, but where does that fit into/why didn't I put that on the list?".

Anyway. I've only played about half of those games (and never finished Earthbound or PS:T, although I really should try to play the latter again..), but the ones I've played I agree are really good.
Those being: 1, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10. I've seen a friend play Cave Story (and I think I have it through Humble Indie Bundle somewhere) but I've never played it myself. I really should play that too.

I never thought I could write one, but once I sat down and did it, it actually filled out pretty easily.

Cave Story is just an amazing experience all around. Doubly so when you realize that every little thing in the original version was done by one man. He even composed the soundtrack!

Haha. I could pretty much take that line and just change the game name to fit two other games (well, one game and one series) that I enjoy so I guess I should play Cave Story too, to have three games that fit that description. :P

The games are Dwarf Fortress and Touhou, by the way.
