Spoilers ahead!
Sam and Mercedes
I feel like it is kind of painfully obvious that Sam and Mercedes will get back together at some point, and I have a tiny bit of conflicted feelings on this. My only real negative here is that I’m tired of love triangles (or, ya know, as Glee has done, love pentagons, hexagons, etc, whatever), and this is basically another love triangle. However, we don’t really know Shane very well, and I did like the tiny bit of Samcedes we saw in Season 2, so for the most part I think they are adorable and I’m glad they’re getting back together. I like seeing Mercedes being chased a bit because she hasn’t really had any love interests in the show except for these two boys, so it’s nice to see her getting some attention in the romance department.
Will’s Proposal and Preparation for Said Proposal
I think some of this whole storyline was a classic “Will doesn’t think before he does things” example. While I do like Emma and Will together, and think they balance each other out well, Will just kind of annoys me most of the time.
I did like that Emma took some of the initiative to try to talk about it, and that Sue and Beiste told her that she could ask Will, he didn’t have to be the one to ask her. For me that brings up some interesting thoughts about women and marriage. Personally, I think it kind of depends on the personalities of the couple in terms of who is doing the asking. In Will and Emma’s case, I think that Emma would get more enjoyment out of being asked than Will would, simply because I think Emma is more of a hopeless romantic than Will is. Will has already been married once and it didn’t work out so well, and perhaps that is what pushed him towards accepting Emma’s parents’ concerns more than he would have normally.
Finn shopping for rings with Will, and then being asked to be his best man, was perhaps a bit weird, but I thought it was a nice and interesting way of bringing back the sort of father/son or mentor/mentee dynamic that these two had throughout much of Season 1. Whether the writers did this intentionally or not, it was nice to me to see a sort of continuity in their relationship.
Emma confronting Will was so heartbreaking, and I absolutely loved her speech about “this is what you get”. Jayma pulled off those lines, which could have been slightly cheesy, wonderfully. She is such a good actress and I think she is underappreciated on this show. Will using her parents’ arguments angered me, because while he does have somewhat of a point - those are important things to think about - he really probably should have thought about those things before deciding he was going to propose to her. I know that Emma didn’t know his plans at this point, but it just shows to the audience how short-sighted Will can be. If you’re going to propose to someone, you have to think about the future, good and bad, before coming up with that decision, and obviously from his surprise during his confrontation with her parents, Will had not.
In the end, I thought Will’s proposal speech was very sweet, and the glee club’s giddiness during the proposal scene (Rachel’s face!) was so adorable. It’ll be interesting to see if this wedding actually happens or not, because quite frankly, neither of them have good track records (this will be Emma’s third marriage/proposal in three years). I do think that, in the end, they will make it.
Becky and Artie
I thought that it was really nice to get some focus on Becky, since during Glee so far we’ve only seen her hanging around every once in a while doing things for Sue. The British accent in her thoughts was hilarious and awesome, and lots of fun to see how her thought process works. I was glad that Artie told off the rest of the glee club for getting on him about hanging out with Becky, because I think that it’s something they needed to hear.
Sue was so wonderful in this episode, I loved seeing her telling Artie to treat Becky like he would anyone else, and then for Sue’s support of Becky when she was heartbroken. Becky’s “don’t let them see you cry” monologue was so sad though, I think my heart broke a bit hearing it.
Finn’s Future
I thought Corey acted these scenes wonderfully, and I was so heartbroken for Finn. While I understood Carole’s reluctance to tell Finn about his father, because that’s not all he was, I think that Finn was right in saying that there was never really going to be a “right time” for that type of news.
I will admit, the “shocking” ending of his proposal to Rachel, I kind of predicted. It was especially hinted at for me that he was with Will doing the ring shopping. While I think they are both very young and probably neither of them is fully matured at this point in their life to make such a huge decision, I thought that Finn’s proposal was really sweet. The fact that he was trying to recreate their first kind-of date was, in my opinion, more romantic than Will’s spectacle with the synchronized swimming. Good job, Finn!
I still think Rachel should say no, but I hope this doesn’t do any damage to their relationship because I really like them together.
The Songs/Performances:
Summer Nights - Lots of fun! Sam and Mercedes sound pretty good together, actually, and I enjoy Grease so it was fun to see them reenacting it a bit.
Wedding Bell Blues - This song will forever be a Gilmore Girls song to me, so it was a bit weird hearing it on Glee. However, while the song may not be my favorite, I really, really enjoyed getting to hear Jayma sing. Plus, putting Emma, Beiste, and Sue ALL on one track = genius! I loved seeing those three doing a song together.
Moves Like Jagger/Jumpin’ Jack Flash - So much fun! Ignoring the fact that Will is kind of creepy to me when he performs songs that are somewhat sexual with the kids, I really enjoyed the choreography (Mike!!) and hearing and watching Artie take the lead on this was so wonderful. I love Moves Like Jagger already, so hearing it performed on the show was awesome. I thought the idea to perform this song for Will’s proposal, however, was a bad idea. Emma is a romantic, and performing Moves Like Jagger was not going to be the right choice at all, but I suppose the guys here don’t know Emma as well as perhaps some of the other Glee members do.
The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face - I had heard a snippet of this before I saw the episode, and while just listening to the song didn’t do a whole lot for me, watching this performance was moving and had me a bit choked up. All the ladies sounded gorgeous (and looked gorgeous), and seeing them all thinking about their loves made me a bit teary. I’m a romantic sap guys, is anyone really surprised at my reaction here? ;) Also, I loved the bit of “girl talk” we got in the scene after the performance was over. It’s nice to see the girls supporting each other instead of fighting.
We Found Love - This song and performance is a lot of fun, but honestly, in my opinion, performing a Rihanna song as part of a marriage proposal (unless you really, really like Rihanna, or it’s the couple’s song) is not really a great idea to me. The synchronized swimming was fun, and I loved seeing the Glee club so genuinely excited, but considering that Emma seems to be a hopeless romantic and that her dream wedding song in Season 1 was I Could Have Danced All Night, I think a better song for her would’ve been something a little more classic, a little older, maybe. That being said, I did really enjoy this performance, and seeing the pure happiness on Emma’s face at finally being proposed to was lovely.
Without You - This song is probably my favorite arrangement of the episode. It’s dramatic without being cheesy, in my opinion, and for me, it’s one of those songs that makes you feel. I felt bad for Rachel at the beginning since it was a classic ‘Finn foot-in-mouth’ situation, but I adored this performance. Seeing the couples in the choir room smiling at each other was so lovely, and I felt like watching the song that I could literally see Finn and Rachel falling more in love, which made my heart melt. I thought it was a great job by Corey Monteith especially at portraying the facial expressions in that scene. I’m not a hardcore Finchel shipper but I think they’re good together, and I loved seeing them so happy, they are adorable.
Sorry for the long-windedness guys, I’ll try to work on my ability to be concise for the next recap!
So, what did you guys think of the episode? Are you in favor of Samcedes, or do you think all the romantic drama is getting old? Did you like Will’s proposal? What did you think of what was revealed about Finn’s father? And what do you think Rachel’s answer will be for Finn when we return in two weeks? Let me know your thoughts, I’d love to hear from you!
