Why Chinese Mothers are SuperiorI agree completely with the author. Westerners suck at parenting because for whatever reason they think it's OK for kids to get bad grades when good grades mostly take effort. Having a good attitude helps too ( Read more... )

Amy Chua takes it to the extreme and theres no point in disallowing TV and sleepovers, but in general the point that she makes is kids will hate anything you make them do and they don't start off with understanding that you have to work at anything to be good at it.

That's not the point I was trying to make. I agree, most kids require parental guidance to teach discipline and focus. The father in the article advocates a position that only serves the most precocious of children. On the other hand, Chua's position is tragically arrogant and misguided ( ... )

I agree that insulting your kids that directly isn't good. Actually,complimenting them is dangerous too. Telling your kid that he's smart is a terrible compliment.

Talent doesn't come as a sequential factor, it's a multiplier to output from input. Talented people get same or better output with a lot less input. There's also an upper ceiling to a lot of things for some people regardless of effort. Regardless, effort is certainly still needed.
