I've always hated phonetics, when I was in teacher training, it had just been mandated for use in the classroom, but most rightheaded teachers were sticking by their own methods. There is research that shows that phonetics assists children who struggle to learn to read to master sounds, but average to bright children really don't need it as it adds the extra step that their brain naturally bypasses

I had thought there was a move away from testing little children. Testing in general warps the way people teach, in my experience. The SATs created such a joke in classrooms, children were just taught to pass the test.

I asked my mum as she used to be a primary school teacher, but she said she's a bit out of date as she changed professions a few years ago. When she was teaching she did something called Reading Recovery for children who couldn't read, which taught names and phonics simultaneously. She has a friend that is currently a primary school teacher she can ask.

I have a really good book called Literacy Is Not Enough which I got when I was doing teacher training, you are welcome to borrow it sometime.
