It's hilarious how Jack always assumes that Stephen just loooooooooves shipboard life. He just can't imagine any other way!
As for Stephen, I think Bettany is in the right of it when he says that Maturin has so many internal resources that you could lock him in solitary for 10 years and he'd come out more or less the same way he went in. I think the world and everything in it is so fascinating to him that it doesn't matter much what piece of the world he inhabits.
I was going to say, "no, he's exactly just cute enough", but then I realized that you're right. Exceeds cuteness RDA by at least 50%, even when he's in hostile mode. :-)
