For Stephen on the eve of expected death
Dover, 1802

'There are days,' he reflected, 'when one sees as though one had been blind the rest of one's life. Such clarity --perfection in everything, not merely in the extraordinary. One lives in the very present moment; lives intently. There is no urge to be doing: being is the highest good ( Read more... )

I think that that is one of the most beautiful poems that I have ever read. Thank you.

Alright, so I must ask:
What the hell was happening in Dover, 1802?
Honestly, you'd think I'd hadn't read these books. Geez. :D

And, love, you must start translating your icons. There's only so much speculative gutter-diving that a man can stand, y'see. :D

But darling Li, it's so amusing to imagine what you might make of the naughty Spaneesh! Luckily, this one can be naughty if you choose (and we always so choose). Yes yes YES!, Stephen sir!

What was going on in Dover: a duel was planned, if you recall. Stephen amongst the dunes, philosophizing to his horse before pistol practice.

That was not 1802, could not possibly have been 1802, as Jack was promoted MaC in 1805!
...right?

Ha! You are completely dished! Jack was promoted M&C on 1 April 1800. He was concerned about the Very Suspicious Date. :-D

In 1805 they're in India, worrying about women.

I think I may be the only one in the world who doesn't want to re-read that book... so painful, at times. Your poem today makes me think... wide open and staring, hearing over-much... while not seeing, and trying not to listen.

Perfect as always, though.

It's a difficult book: such unexpected venom. It a was shocking development, and shocking to see Stephen so willing.
