When Stephen loses his heart, he really does it up big. This poem seemed like those long silences of The Mauritius Command, where he's trying to convince himself that he doesn't care.
oh! curses, I haven't read Mauritius Command...(as I have been utterly poor and consumed by essays these past few months. A tragic combination, that is...)

The friend was Rodrigue de Posa. And all this is part of Schiller's drama "Don Carlos".I have two translations into English, one from Oberon Books, London,ISBN 1 870259 51 3,the other from Oxford University Press(World Clasics),ISBN 0-19-282373-6.I adore Posa's one endearment to Carlos: "Liebling meiner Seele",(one translation:My soul's first love; in French:Favorit de mon âme).In the 18th century it has been known as THE friendship drama ( and later by Verdi, as THE friendship opera)

I got this one at The Wondering Minstrels; others from plagiarist.com; and the bulk of them from my own books.

Diana, ironically, makes me grateful for Jack & Sophie. So at his worst, there are still people who do see him, appreciate him, and care about him.

I wonder how his story would have been different if had been prepared to meet her. Would he have double-bolted his heart?
