yesterday, i found out that CBS was planning on making an updated Sherlock series (called, "Elementary")  of their own.   (BTW...why would you name a show you want to be intelligent with a word that is synonymous with "simple?"  i know that's part of one of Sherlock's catch phrases...but really?!) while i had heard mention of it in comments on ( Read more... )

I think it sounds ridiculous. :/ When you already have one hugely successful, highly regarded series on the same subject, with the same characters that's come out in the same general time frame, I just...I don't see how this makes sense. They've got some HUGE shoes to fill, in any case, and I know I'm not interested. :P It's like when they made that Camelot series, right after Merlin. :P And I mean, Merlin has it's flaws, sure, but I still always think it's weird when people try to all capitalize on the same idea at once. :/

I totally agree with you. It feels weird when a network tries to make a "me too" show. It'll have some high standards to live up to. I really doubt that it will be successful unless there is enough of a small population of people who don't get/watch PBS and are unaware of the superior BBC Sherlock.

And I remember hearing about "Camelot" and seeing a preview for it once when Merlin was big, but then I didn't hear anything more about it. I'm assuming it didn't fare too well?

Yeah, something about it just feels off. :/ And I feel like there's this weird sense too, that maybe they feel they have to somehow do something for "American audiences" or something? As if there's no way to access content from any country you want nowadays, you know? >_> I don't even know if that's part of the decision in this case or not, but... It seems weird to me either way.

I watched one episode of Camelot, just because I was curious and there were some actors in it that I liked, but... It wasn't that great. Totally different take on the story than with Merlin, but... Still just not that great. And it was cancelled after one season. ;)

Yeah was thinking that too. But then "Sherlock" is being released by PBS in the States (Season 2 comes out in May) which means technically it's available to everyone. Then I guess it depends if that watch PBS at that point. But you could say that about any network and it's still like two channels having the same show at the same time. Definitely weird feeling.

Yeah I remember seeing that the actors in it were really good ones, but I never got around to picking it up. I guess there was a reason why it didn't last too long. Perhaps they should have waited a little before trying to get in on the Merlin crowd.

It's part of the tendency of the American market to not take risks right now. They know that nostalgia sells. Sherlock, as we know, is awesome, but there's still the issue that Americans tend to fuck shit up. They didn't need to make a new Millennium series. The Swedish ones were just fine. They did it anyway. It's why they rebooted Charlie's Angels. They fear the idea of not making money.

I find it repugnant and I recommend not watching it, or live tweeting the fiasco.

You're right. It's that fear of risk that is the same reason why we're seeing a lot of movies based on comics and bestselling books, which have already have a fan base. They know they can get away with at least some money. (Whatever happened to the dramas and original story films we used to see? They don't make movies like that anymore). It's a sign of the economic times. Though I guess it doesn't stop networks like CBS from trying to be a "copy cat." It really just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I'm sad for the cast, crew, and writers who's time and money will be wasted making such a "me too" show. I don't think Sherlock fans will take to "Elementary" kindly.
