This time last year, I was writing my dissertation. Or at least, I was avoiding writing my dissertation. Fervently. To be honest, that time in my life is kind of a blur of late snow, no sleep, and debilitatingly intense crushes (one on my dissertation supervisor, one on my now-girlfriend - the latter worked out rather better than the former). nothing rhymed with schmindustrial schmevolution

This made me giggle, and I loved the whole piece (not least because it is a journal entry that suits the topic rather than a fiction piece). I feel ya on the nostalgia, though I can't 'go back' and read much of it any more because the gender roles make it clearly not utopian for me :-p Somehow my kid mind just skimmed over that but my adult mind refuses.

Thanks! I prefer non fiction pieces too, generally.
As an adult I am SO AWARE of problematic elements of things I enjoy and sometimes it gets me down but mostly it hasn't ruined much for me, just made me a better person. Which seems a pretty good result. But yeah, fantasy that can't fantasise away the patriarchy makes me roll my eyes a little.

I have meant to read the Susan Cooper books. I love fantasy. I think it's a really cool thing to write a discertation on.

Someone else in my group was writing their dissertation on vampires, so I think they won in the cool dissertation... stakes.

They're a little bit more obscure as children's fantasy goes (they're not exactly Harry Potter, I mean) but worth a read if you're into that sort of thing!
