It's been a busy few months. Every crisis of events I reach seems to be merely bumbled through without arresting destruction or resolution; but things are definately changing.

The paper I mentioned in June has been accepted, my primary success; the practical side of my PhD has ended without disasters or significant further discoveries. The thesis I' ( Read more... )

It sounds to me like you're handling things remarkably well considering the ammount of stress you must be under. Just hang in there and better days will come, Duncan! :)

I shouldn't really be stressed, since I've no real deadlines. Its more the problem of having too many tasks to sort them out, but that's something I need to start learning to deal with better. Thanks for encouragement Marta ;)

Every post from you is insightful.

Considering that you've yet to submit your paper, you must really be a kind of high-flyer to get interview requests. Considering the state of the world now, you should be flattered an employer has chosen you. Of course, don't jump at the first offer, and how prudent you want to be is up to you.

I've mentioned it before, but my greatest regret is not taking a trip before starting work. Granted, I've met Americans and Brits here who really overdo it (blowing $10k on a trip from China to SE Asia), but I think you're not that type. Go away somewhere. See a bit of the world before work exposes more of its crude side to you. Greece sounds good. India as well.

And I didn't know you're at Loughborough University. I have a friend doing her Masters there..

I was generally advised to start applying in the last year of the PhD, so I can start work promptly. It's under the assumption that I get the PhD of course, but the interviewers on wednesday that I presented my research to did say they were confident I would get it. The job there made use of synthesis and MS, so I think I got that interveiw because an unusual combination of experience; it looks a good job, so I'm hoping to get it despite still needing to write the thesis. Thanks for the encouragement with travelling. What course is your friend doing?

My friend is studying a Masters of Science in Globalization & Sport (I think that's what it is called). She's been there about a month already. And like me, she's a long-distance runner.
