I guess dissent is no longer Patriotic

I have been reading with much interest and slight amusement all of the posts where folks are now saying that we need to work together ( Read more... )

This is why I no longer post anything about the economy, religion or politics. Even when I was just asking a question or was laughing at a joke that was sent to me, people got on my LJ and ranted at me and everyone else. I've been going through my LJ and slowly getting rid of those old posts. It's so hard to judge someone's emotions through the internet.

Are you coming to CRF this weekend??? I know we all would love to see you there!!!

I have been careful. My fear is that silence is taken for agreement. I sat out a lot this year just because the Cracker Jack to Prize ratio was way too high.

"silence is taken for agreement"

I had not thought of it that way, but I can see your point.

As a blanket statement, while my FL here is shorter than most, most of you guys know the guy behind the curtain.

I figured with the current state of the LT, it was better to be thought to be in agreement than be a lightning rod for all that is seen to be wrong in the US.

What's ironic to me is that, at least on the news, I've never heard anyone - the Clintons, the Democrat leadership, or any of the various talking heads - be called unpatriotic for voicing a dissenting opinion. But the moment that opinion was challenged they came right out of the box screaming, "How DARE you challenge my patriotism?!!" Dude - it was your judgment, perhaps even your honesty, that was being challenged. Not your patriotism.

Obviously personal exchanges have been otherwise, but in the national forum? Never seen it.

Did I just say "dude?"

*raises hand* I recall four years ago getting called unamerican and I should leave the country because I had a different opinion from the president on things that directly pertained to my own health and well-being. In fact, it's mentioned in one of the links I listed above.

I have always believed that if you don't like how it worked out, make your voice heard, but don't make it insulting.

And I still believe that.

And that's whether it's on the local level or the national forum.

The insults going from both sides during the campaign were quite honestly disgusting.

When the NATIONAL forum calls me "Not a real american" and a "communist" because I disagree with them, why yes, that's being said on the national level. Please don't tell me my honesty had anything to do with being told I am not a "real american" because I live in northern Virginia.

I'm not trying to start an argument. Just telling you a counterpoint to the statement you made. You haven't heard it. I have.

To what national forum are you referring? I'm not challenging your statement, I really want to know.

What I meant by "national forum" was those who make their living with a TV or microphone in their face or who write a column in a national paper. As I said, I never saw the patriotism of anyone in the Democrat leadership challenged in this forum, despite their almost constant cries that it was.

Now if you're counting the blogosphere, then yes - there's been a lot of name-calling on both sides and a lot of it seriously ugly.

I know (a great deal) of your politics & even though our viewpoints may be different, the affection remains the same. I respect how you feel & WANT to know your opinion, LT, because I value it - mostly because you don't force-feed it to anyone & you're always open to other's opinions. *grin* Must be that cop side of you showing.

BTW, I've had several cars blow by me the past several months & I've been yelling out the car window, "THERE'S NO EXCUSE FOR SPEEDING!"

Sweetie, *compromise* (which is what I have been advocating) and reaching across party lines (again, what I have been advocating), doesn't make a difference which side you're on.

And I have said for the last eight years that "we" need to stop insulting each other and work together. Admittedly, I was also advocating working towards changing things, but it is no less true of the opposite side today.

I posted my links above, I do not need to do so again.

For all that our politics may be somewhat different, we are not all that different ourselves, you and I.

Love you, darlin'.

That is the other part of what I have found...most of the folks I am friends with that may be a part of the 'loyal opposition' are not the issue. It has been the 'pile on and club to death' crowd.

"For all that our politics may be somewhat different, we are not all that different ourselves, you and I."

That's why you're still here in my journal babe...

*MWAH* :)

I just wish people would stop gloating, stop bashing, stop flaming, on BOTH sides of the equation, and start working together in compromise.

The best compromises are the ones where nobody's really happy, but nobody's really unhappy either.
