They had discussed it when they moved there. They could either go to a large city and blend into the crowd, or they could go to a small town where no one could find them. Lima, Ohio had seemed like a nice, peaceful little town. A place where they could go undetected. A place where they could feel safe for once. But that all changed with a knock on the door.
It had seemed innocent enough. Finn had answered the door and then they knew. The blondes managed to dash up the stairs, grab their emergency bags, and fly out the window. But Finn had been grabbed by the authorities. So suddenly, it was just the two of them.
Starting out as a clan of ten and winding up as two was not a place anyone wanted to be.
Sam’s heart was pounding out of his chest. “C’mon, Quinn!” he called over his shoulder. The two of them ran through the woods as fast as they could. They knew flying would be faster, easier, but they couldn’t do that without getting themselves caught.
“Where are we going??” Quinn called.
Sam didn’t answer. Logically, he knew what their next step should be. Fly to any large city - maybe Dallas. Change their names, dye their hair, enroll in a new school, lie through their teeth for the next five years until they were under suspicion again and then skip town.
But something pulled him in another direction, and he knew exactly what it was. He couldn’t leave yet.
As the two raced through the trees, Sam thought to himself about what had just happened. There were no warning signs this time. Nothing to indicate that anyone thought anything was off about them. They had only been there for two years, and then just out of the blue there was a knock on the door like it was the pizza delivery boy. Then Finn had screamed and they knew what had happened.
“Sam, where are we going??” Quinn demanded.
Again, Sam didn’t answer. Instead, he stopped in front of a house and then ran up the driveway.
“Samuel, don’t even think about it!”Quinn hissed. “Sam! Sam!”
He ignored his best friend, and instead, slung his emergency bag onto the hood of the large, black Navigator. He dug through it and finally pulled out a notebook pad and a pencil.
Kurt,
I have to leave town. You won’t see me again. I’m sorry.
I never got to tell you, but I love you.
Sam
He tore off the piece of paper and slid it under the windshield wiper of the car. Then he shoved the notebook back in his bag.
“He’s never gonna forgive you, y’know,” Quinn said softly. He turned to look at her.
“I know. Let’s get out of here.”
The two blondes shrugged their jackets off and unfurled their wings. Quinn stretched her wing muscles delicately before nodding to Sam and the two of them launched into the air.
Sam knew what they did to those who got caught. They were locked in bulletproof enclosures, like they weren’t humans, and tested and experimented on, as the government tried to figure out what the hell kind of creatures they were.
But even still, he couldn’t help but wonder in the back of his mind if maybe sticking around for Kurt would’ve been worth the risk.
