Aldi has chili and pepper plants in their specials this week, and add I've had good experiences growing chili, I thought I'd give both a chance. They said transfer asap, so Judith and I did that this afternoon and I thought maybe it was time for one of these posts again. So ( Read more... )

Have you had actual figs on your fig tree? We got figs for the first time last year but then the bloody birds ate them before they were ripe. So I intend to net it this year. (And the grape vine/pergola, which had the same problem.)

Not on this fig, it's much too small and new. But in a previous house we did, they take two years to ripen so the trick is to wrap the fruit in bubble wrap over winter.

Oh, thank you, I was not aware of that. But what with the warm winter & our south-facing central-London microclimate I think we may have gotten away with it -- there are baby figs on it already and I guess those must be the ones from last year that have overwintered.

Yes, the ones on the tiny tree at the community centre local HE groups meet at survived the winter this year, where they haven't before.
