Some meta and notes on "Hourglass"

or, why the vid was dedicated to cathexys.

This was supposed to be a really quick post on my basic reasons for wanting to make this vid, but then it stopped being brief and got long, and then it got longer, because apparently I find nothing so fascinating as myself, so, you know what? Don't even read it, seriously. Go away.

My vanity, let me show you it )

ROCK. How is it that you are as awesome as you are? I had to keep pressing repeat, and every time I grinned through the whole thing. Repeating-day is one of my favorite things, and I'd only seen, I think, five of those episodes. Clearly I have some watching to do.

And I love the idea behind it. Because of course, yes, it IS a feature, not a bug!

Oh, thank you so much! I'm so happy you enjoyed the vid, and the idea :-).

I wouldn't, umm, necessarily recommend actually watching the episodes in the vid. It wasn't -- an endorsement, or anything. Just sayin'.

As I was watching I was thinking of Warren et al discussing the X-Files ep in "Life Serial," so reading your meta really tied it all together for me. This is such a great concept, and the execution is brilliant. And oh my god, the ending is hilarious!

And Star Trek: The Next Generation - they talk about that one, too! :-)

I'm really glad you liked the vid - and that you bothered to read through the meta! Thank you!

I was going to leave a comment about the vid and then discovered this commentary, which I really enjoyed reading. I can attest to the pleasures found in a commonly told story type. I remember being quite excited about Mystery Spot before it aired because I was thinking of all the possibilities of what they could do with it (and thankfully this was one episode that didn't disappoint me). One thing that has also occurred to me is that stories with a recognizable theme are easier to remember. I recognized about half of those stories in the vid even though I rarely watched X-Files for example. And now I want to see the ST:TNG one again! (And I miss Daybreak which was a really well done show).

And hee, I'm glad you kept the end in. It was perfect! I've always liked the song too so this was a really rewarding vid for me to watch :>

Hey - I'm very glad you enjoyed the commentary, thank you! Yes, I agree - when a trope is used, the episode is more memorable, because you have an "anchor" to remember it by. (I also agre that Mystery Spot was gerat - probably my fave of the season!). Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the vid - thanks for commenting!

This is pretty much awesome. I also love the time loop story--specifically because it allows you to indulge in the angst and grief of killing a character without having them actually die. (Which makes Xena pretty much a hat trick since everyone dies angstily at least once, even the horse ( ... )

As I recall, TNG did several time loop stories, though it's been a long time since I watched them. Your knowledge is probably more intimate, having just rewatched, but my feeling is that post-Groundhog Day the stories really follow a very rigid structure. The TNG episodes I don't remember being so slavish. (For example, no goofing off through a bunch of loops, no trying to kill yourself through a bunch of loops.) So even if the time loop predates Groundhog Day, Groundhog Day became the template.I actually don't think they did anything else that I'd call a time loop - I might be wrong, but I think this was the only one. But you're totally right, though, that it was different from all of the others - neat that you remember! I didn't realize the differences until I started researching for the vid ( ... )

I just saw this vid for the first time at Vividcon, and I completely adored it. It was one of the standout vids of the weekend for me. I'll be raving about it in my con report (which I'm editing now & hope to post soon) but for now just wanted to say: holy wow! This vid rocks my socks!

Hey, thank you so much!! The vid was a blast to make - I'm so happy you liked it!

I read your con report - thanks so much for the recs! (Slim Shady is here, by the way!). And your description of the other vids at the con has my mouth watering; so, nothing to be done but to sit in front of my mailbox until my con DVD arrives!
