I find it reassuring to have books that I haven't read yet. In case of siege, I am set!

Well, there is that! But even now I occasionally declare that I have nothing to read. And that's just shameful.

No, you're just declaring that you aren't in the mood to read what you currently have unread in your possession. Nothing wrong with that! (And it does make for a good trip to Borders . . . or the used book store in my case, but I realize that is a whole different discussion!)

How did you escape reading Tess...? I thought we all had to read that in high school.
Read it and HATE IT, I should clarify.

Also, The Historian unfinished? I read that non-stop, but then I do have a weakness for books about academics and vampires.*

* Are there are any other books about academics and vampires?

Tess...? That may have been during the semester that wasn't, for me. I got out of a lot of stuff in 10th grade. ;-)

The Historian just didn't push my hot buttons the way it clearly did yours. I like it, but parts of it are a slog for me. I think that's related to my workload, though: when it's heavy, I tend to read absolute crap if I'm reading anything at all.

hmmm...I quite liked Tess. But then, I didn't have to read it for school.

What surprises me is that you haven't read The Catcher in the Rye..which IMO, is one of the best angsty books ever written!

I suspect they made us read Tess of the D' as a lesson-- "Look, girls, be independent and don't let stupid men ruin your life."
