Again
As Hephaistion entered the hall, as usual, every eye fell upon him. He acted, as usual, as if he didn’t notice.
He reached the King’s couch in several long strides, a vexed look on his face. Alèxandros paused his chattering to watch Hephaistion’s progress, feeling uneasy. Had he something to fear? Had he done something wrong?
He thoroughly examined his conscience, and found nothing blameworthy; nevertheless, he didn't relax quite yet. He had a weird feeling that something was wrong. His lover’s behaviour spoke volumes: Alèxandros knew he was in trouble.
Hephaistion stood facing his King, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. “You did it again!” was all he said with a calm, yet obviously angry voice. Alèxandros simply blinked, aghast.
Hephaistion shook his head, apparently annoyed by Alèxandros’ dullness, before turning his back on him and heading to the farthest couch, immediately followed by a crowd of flute players, pages, beautiful hetairai, even some Hetairoi.
Alèxandros had frozen still, even forgetting to drink his wine. No matter how hard they tried, none of the generals surrounding him managed to pull another word from him. Krateròs rolled his eyes in disgust, Ptolemy shook his head in disbelief, Bagoas quickly left to add a note on a draft of the book he was writing: “How to Manipulate a King and Live Happily Hereafter”.
It took almost an hour for Alèxandros to finally break through his wary inertia: he rose from his couch and hesitantly approached Hephaistion’s. All those surrounding the General fled like a flock of frightened birds.
When Hephaistion finally raised his eyes to him, Alèxandros mustered all his courage and stammered: “What is it, Hephaistion? What did I do?”
An unexpected laughter was the reply. Then Hephaistion seraphically answered: “Actually, I don’t know. But I thought you would.”
