Commute. It's cheaper to live in the burbs than it is to live in the cities, although not by much.

Another thing people will do is communial living sorta deal. If not a bunch of friends, then their girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife and both parties bringing in money. That effectively doubles the income, though it's not doubling, you've got other bills that will rise in price due to two people living there, along with food, gas, etc., so probably more like 1.5 times. Employers sometimes don't care to expect how you live, just that you get to work(not always, but some of the corp situations). Basically if people can get away with working for that wage(whether they live with parents or whatever), and are willing to work for that wage, then they'll pay it. They raise the pay rate because they can't get anyone, or anyone qualified, to work for what they are paying.

and what did louisiana rank? depending on where i wanted to live, i could afford a 2 bedroom on my salary of approx. $14/hr. of course, that limits me to slums or suburbs or half of my income.
