Here's an article about philosophy:
http://www.slate.com/id/2137223/

I disagree with a LOT of what was implied by this article. I'm not ok with the idea that philosophy is basically about common sense. And I'm certainly not okay with the implication that philosophy is democratic, and that surveys of what people think should be the basis of this new philosophical movement. Hello? SOMETIMES PEOPLE HAVE CONTRADICTING VIEWS. AND. SOMETIMES. PEOPLE. ARE. DUMB. That's the entire POINT of philosophy - to enable people to figure out seeming contradictions.

Philosophy is both a science and the foundation of science. Philosophy/logic allows us to go through a logical progression from a set of obvious premises to a valid conclusion. Philosophy is therefore the *basis* of every decision we make. Every time we judge which of two things has a higher value: philosophy. Every time we judge what is morally acceptable and what isn't: philosophy. Every time we make any choice whatsoever: philosophy. Philosophy is the basis of the very way one thinks: it is the core of one's being. Philosophy is INDISPENSABLE to real life: happenstance details, meaningless coincidences, and all.

So doing away with philosophical thought and electing philosophies through democratic rule to make it applicable to real life? That's the stupidest, most ignorant piece of bullshit I've ever heard said about philosophy. Fuck.

philosophy, rants, back to lj
